she said, "I'll be coming more often to paint. I just don't have the space in my little apartment."
A month ago, she would have asked for permission to come to the studio. It warmed my heart that she didn't.
She bit her lip, "I spoke to my aunt."
I nodded. I could guess the reason why. She had been bothered by Eve's claim that her mother had taken money in exchange for disappearing from Nathaniel's life. Irene continued.
"I kind of briefed her about everything," she said, blinking moisture in her eyes, "she told me that mom was in a difficult place when she came back home with me. She was scared, she had no job, her parents were gone, and she had me to take care of."
