The clouds parted overhead, revealing a few scattered stars. One shone particularly bright. Chase looked at it, lost in thought. "Ever read The Princess and the Frog?" My mind was blank. "What?" "There was this firefly crazy about a star," he explained. "And he named it Evangeline." I nodded dumbly. "Yeah, and then?" Along the shore, the waves had frozen in place, forming undulating layers of white. New surges shoved fresh snow forward in a rhythmic dance. "Nora," he murmured.

Sort of. My fingers fumbled toward the nightstand. I grabbed the glass of water Rosa always left there and downed half of it in one breath. But the shaking didn’t stop. I turned toward the small shelf near the window and reached for a book. The only thing that could slow my mind down enough to breathe. I flipped the lamp on. Its golden glow bathed the cover in warmth. “The Kingdom of Soft Stars.” A children’s fairytale. Sweet. Magical. It was about a young girl named Elara who could speak to the stars. But the stars only whispered at night—and only if you were brave enough to be alone in the dark.

I sighed. I turned to the first story and started reading. I read story after story. Some were interesting, some were familiar, some were bizarre. Then, more than halfway through the book, I found it. The very first line read, "There once was a young girl. Her wolf had no name." It was titled, 'Child of Stars', kind of fitting since my Dad's wolf is Starfire. My wolf chimed in with her usual pessimism, 'It won't help.'
