I leaned back, steepled my fingers, and waited for the strike. Luca didn't look at his notes. He didn't look at Elena. He looked directly at me. "Atlas is an impressive piece of engineering, Aurelia," he began, his voice smooth and dangerous. "It’s a masterpiece of defensive programming. But that’s exactly the problem." I felt a ripple of tension move through my side of the table. My Chief Technology Officer, Sarah, shifted in her seat, her jaw tightening. "Explain," I said, my voice clipped.

I finally find my voice to shout at him. “Yes!” He screams back. “For the time being, both you and Lenox are a danger to the life of your daughter, God damn it! Atlas is a blood-thirsty hellcat, the last of his kind, and the only reason why his species didn’t survive is because the fathers ate their offspring! And you? Think you are innocent? The leech you befriended can take over, it can shut you out and you won’t even remember anything it makes you do! Do you remember how you tried to kill Ophelia?”

Not once did Atlas slow down. After a while, I started feeling nauseous, so I closed my eyes, focusing on anything but the movement around me. It felt like less than an hour before Atlas had slowed down a bit, and then eventually to a full stop. I opened my eyes once again to see him walking up to one of the most beautiful homes I’d ever seen. It reminded me of a castle and had stained glass windows with beautiful designs etched into them. The gates opened and he carried me inside. It smelled strongly of him and I knew this was his home. Kiera was spot on when she’d said he would probably bring me here.

"Yeah, yeah just shocked," She sighed in understanding and took a place beside me. "I understand but I can't get over how happy I am for you and Batya!" My lips twitched in amusement as I bumped my shoulder with hers and rolled my eyes. "Relax. we both know there's no long lost love between Atlas and I," "Even though," She sniffled and flipped her hair. "He's miles better than shitty Gabriel and his terrible family. My wolf chuckled lightly. We had to agree, he was better.

Zarek’s POV The thing about me? I get bored easily. Too easily. And when boredom and suspicion collide, well, let’s just say chaos becomes my favorite dance partner. Atlas had been walking around with that smug, self-righteous face of his, pretending he’s everyone’s golden boy, while Talia paraded around like butter wouldn’t melt in her mouth. But I wasn’t buying it. Not after what I saw in the restroom. So I decided to stir the pot. Why not? If Atlas was guilty of something, nothing would flush it out faster than pushing him into the fire.

Atlas immediately leaned over Ryan’s shoulder excitedly, his eyes shining. “The blue book mommy! The blue one!” he giggled loudly and points at the suitcase. I searched through the clothes until I spotted the worn hardcover book Quincy had bought him a year ago. The corners were bent from how often Atlas forced me to read it to him. When I held it up, Atlas clapped happily. “Yes, that one!” I walked to them and Ryan smiled softly as he took the book from my hand, his fingers brushing mine briefly. The contact made a zap of electricity to pass through me and my breath hitches while my pulse jumped traitorously.

Now I had to learn to live with that. I could have ended it back at the house. I could have looked Detective Nora in the eye and told her that Theodore Pierce was a lie—that he was the very ghost they were hunting. I could have whispered his true name: Azrael Atlas St. Claire. The Architect. But I didn’t. Because I’m not a fool.

His eyebrows knit together, and he shakes his head no, “You don’t need to fret over that, Elyria. Your smile is more than enough for me.” My cheeks burn from his kind words, especially as he says them in front of some of the closest people in his life. I grab one of the books out of the bag and say, “Well, Alpha, is it alright if I get to the office and to my reading?” I didn’t pay attention to what I was grabbing. As Atlas grabs the book and examines it, I realize what it is and regret the decision to grab a random book. It’s a romance book with a half-naked man on the cover, a girl in a skimpy dress, and a wolf in the background titled ‘Taming the Alpha. ’

When I wake up, Atlas is sitting up beside me, reading the book I had recently been devouring to keep myself entertained. Eyes widening, I feel a wave of embarrassment flare through me as I realize just what that book was full of. "You’re up?" Atlas asks, not missing a beat. "Y-yeah," I respond, trying to ignore the burning on my cheeks and the back of my neck. "Um… How much of that have you read?" "Enough," he smirks. "No wonder you’re such a freak in bed." Shit. Could the earth open up and swallow me whole now? How could I have forgotten to hide that book like I was doing all the other times? Now he was going to think that I was some weirdo for reading such things.

I regret it a little. I picked up my book and moved closer to Atlas, resting my head on his shoulder. "Then I will be very hopeful today." The blowing wind brought Atlas' body fragrance and swirled around. I liked the scent that was thinly drifting up to my nostrils. I don't know what Atlas' face looks like right now, but I feel his touch on my head warmly. I enjoyed my time in that position for quite a while until I finished my book. Then Atlas takes turns leaning against me as the clouds begin to darken.
