There, bathed in the soft glow of the lights, stood a piece of coral, nearly waist-high and meant for display. Lydia was carefully polishing its edges, each movement slow and deliberate.
When she noticed them, she called out, "There you two are. Take a look at what I've got. It cost me a fortune to get it back. This is Penelope's birthday present."
She looked down at the coral with obvious pride.
Eugene furrowed his brow as he studied it. "A coral piece? For Penelope? It doesn't really seem like her thing," he said, a note of doubt creeping into his voice.
