Kennedy POV. The weather was bad, but I needed to get that new book, it's Robert birthday gift, who'd knew a grown up man would kill for the newest werewolf love book. I got into my car, drove carefully toward the local book store, they had the new book reserved for me. It was supposed to one quick drive, until I walked into the library. A girl was sitting on a bean bag, her blond hair was covering her eyes with overgrown bangs, she tried to huff them away from her face but to no use. She looked young, maybe she's just here with her parents, looking down at the book she had in her hands it was a kids story. Does she read for the local kids? Or is it just for her?

“See… I have good ideas too.” Ivy smiled and elbowed him. ⸻ The library was silent in that thick, sacred way only old libraries could be. Dust floated in shafts of evening sunlight. Rows upon rows of books towered around them, heavy with secrets. Kyle picked up a dusty tome titled “Herbal Remedies and the Curse of the Alder Witches” and flipped it open. “I think this one just tells you how to make soup that kills people slowly,” he muttered. “Useful for finals week,” Ivy said, scanning her own book.

Cole brings it to me, sitting back down on the couch while the kids roll around with their toys on the rug in front of us. Maeve is slack in Aviva’s arms, both of them fast asleep on the opposite couch. I smile at the image and quietly rip the paper away. It’s a book. Smaller than average and bound by fresh leather. There’s no title engraved on the cover. I look up at Cole, thinking he’d be smiling and a little pink in the cheeks in anticipation for my reaction, but he looks grave. I open it. It’s a printed rendition of the Book of Whispers.

“I really hadn’t thought about it yet. Usually Sundays are a double shift in the diner. Ummm, I don’t know. Library maybe?” “Melinda and I went yesterday, Mama. Oh, she got you this,” Maddie runs into the living room and picks up a small black device. It’s about 3x the size of a phone and Maddie runs back over to me. “It’s a kindle. She said you have an unlimited account now so you can read whatever you want to. And it’s already connected to the library, so you don’t have to go there to check out digital books. Just pick one and it’ll d******d. Although it does still have a limit on how many books you can have ‘checked out’ at one time. I’ve got one too, but I wanted to have a few actual boo

All the books were marked with a white X by the side so they were easier to find and place side by side. "Finally. YOU SHOULD HAVE KNOWN by JEAN HAFF KORELITZ." "That one's deep." All the books had one thing in common: they all had sprinkles and bits of thrillers in them.

The warm, yellow lights of the coffee shop created the perfect toasty atmosphere to escape the cool winter chill. Zoe rubbed her hands together as she entered, removing her thick gloves and settling into a table at the rear of the café. The late night news hummed on the television to the left of her, the only consistent sound in the essentially empty space. Digging through her bag, Zoe grabbed out a frayed library book and flipped it open.

“Thanks. Gonna need brain-bleach to get rid of that image.” Cassie chuckles and takes a half-bow. “My pleasure.” I sigh, doing my best to repress images of Martha Wilkins (all three-hundred pounds of her) enjoying the latest Mills & Boon novel, say Midnight in the Desert, Midnight in the Summer, or, predictably, Midnight in the Harem. “All right, then. You’re free. Nothing coming until Monday morning. Got a shipment of comic books due. The York Book Emporium from Pennsylvania is sending us some of their overstock.”

It could lead to nothing good for me I finished making my first cup of coffee and went back to the bedroom to put my shirt on. I wandered to the guest bedroom to see if I could find a book that would keep my interest. I grabbed a mystery that had a cool story line, but on my way back to the living room I noticed a door. I mean I had seen it before but never wondered what it led to. Now I had time and I didn't hesitate. I turned the knob and felt around for a light switch as I stepped beyond the threshold.

“You’re one of those conspiracy people.” “I am,” she said proudly. “Thank you for noticing.” I poured tea into mugs and added sugar, too much, as usual. Bailey watched, horrified. “Sweet tea,” she said, sounding like she’d discovered a crime. “You’re a sweet tea person.” “Yes,” I said, defensive on principle. Bailey leaned closer, eyes gleaming. “Okay. So here’s what we do. We start a book club.” I blinked. “What?” “A book club,” she repeated, like it was obvious. “For romance. Specifically romantic fantasy. Specifically.” she lowered her voice again, conspiratorial “ the ones with wolves.”
