They were almost human if it weren't for the freakish heads and oozing arms. Each one had no visible eyes in their dished-in heads. One of the monsters flanked the figure in the green hoodie, who reached up to run its hand along its jaw bone. I saw the figure also had dripping hands, and eyes covered in a thick layer of bandaging that he turned back to the papers. Beside the breathing from the monsters and Cosmo’s hushed chatter with his friend, the Base was deathly quiet. Why was he even out here so late at night?

Hazel's anxious face became redder, then she rolled her cute eyes and she turned her head into the window. The awkward atmosphere grew intensely, as Jae started teasing her. Then suddenly the company's guard knocked on the door. "Boss, Someone's here from the City Bank, he said that he is the director of the bank and came here to apologize to you!" Daryl Poxter was in despair when he knew that the one he offended this morning was no ordinary person, and it turns out that he is the most feared person in the world who turned it up side down.

I put my hands on his chest and pulled my face a little back so that I don't have to face his nasty one. "You got so-...." Thorny vines shot out of the woods and wrapped themselves around one of the monsters, trapping it but it wouldn't hold for long. The other two ran towards me with a speed I hadn't expected from monsters their size. Blasting them with my water magic didn't deter them, instead, it angered them further. They had almost gotten to me when the mist popped out six huge monsters, five of which immediately went into action. The winged monster didn't, instead, it trotted to me and nuzzled my cheek, making me smile. The Egran, which I had decided to name my monsters, fought with Karissa's scorpion-wolves with such speed that stunned the scorpion-wolves themselves at first.

Little did I know then, the true monsters of this world are so much more terrifying than what the darkest depths of our imaginations could conjure up. Before me stands a man – no, a monster who is a living manifestation of pure evil. His presence is far more ominous than any monster from a story. I don’t know how, but his eyes, cold and soulless, hold a malevolence that surpasses anything I have ever seen. This evil being relishes in the suffering of others; he revels in it. He enjoys it. Nefzaan is a sick, evil monster who needs to be destroyed.

“Which checks out—since you’re just a pretty little cunt with daddy issues.” Crack. The back of my hand slammed across his mouth so hard his head jerked sideways. I stepped into him, eyes locked on his, and my voice low and shaking. “Wrong,” I whispered. “I’m your worst fucking nightmare.” His lip split, but he only laughed like a maniac. I’d met his kind before—men who fed on fear, one who didn’t break with pain. But even monsters had a threshold. And I knew exactly where to find his.

And that terrified him. Kristen had looked at him like he was more than a monste, like he was a good man. And deep down, he believed her. But belief is dangerous. It makes you soft. And softness is fatal in his world. Carlo collapses into a chair, overwhelmed. He’s a feared man, a killer. But now he’s haunted by the memory of Kristen’s breathless gasp, the warmth of her skin, and the sound of her crying behind a locked door.

I stood before she could say anything, the floor cold beneath my bare feet. “Now,” I continued, voice shaking but unbroken, “I’m choosing to become the monster who didn’t give anyone a chance.” I met her gaze fully then. “So I can be their chance.” The silence that followed felt alive. Heavy. Dangerous. Mae sucked in a breath. Rowan’s head snapped toward me, eyes sharp—but he said nothing. The Ancient One studied me for a long time. Not my face—my bones. My scars. The place where fear had once lived and been replaced by something harder.

I reached out, my fingers trembling slightly before grazing the edge of a scar near his shoulder blade. He flinched, a low, animalistic growl vibrating in his chest, but he didn't pull away. He stayed as still as stone. "And the man... the man is the only one I want to be with right now." Julian turned slowly, his dark eyes searching mine. The cold, calculated doctor who had faced down the recovery team was gone. In his place was a man who looked utterly hollowed out, starving for a kindness he didn't think he deserved.

Dominic caught the scent of my sudden fear instantly, a dark, mocking smile tugging at the corner of his lips. “You’re scared of me,” he murmured, his voice a dangerously quiet, gravelly purr that vibrated across the dead space between us. He leaned forward slightly over the body, bringing his sharp, chiseled features into my field of vision. “Good. If last night wasn’t clear enough for you in my chambers… now you know why they call me the Monster Alpha King. Now you know exactly what happens when someone betrays me or alters my protocols.”
