She threatened to lace the syrup with laxatives if I didn’t tell her who the date was for.” Madeline bursts into laughter. “Sounds like her.” We sit, and for a while, we just eat. Talk. Joke. She tells me about Elijah and how he moves like a hyperactive spider monkey on steroids. I tell her how Rock once tried to seduce a warrior wolf’s wife just to steal her steak. We laugh more than I thought possible. But eventually… the jokes run out. The quiet settles. And the air changes. Madeline lies back on the blanket, staring up at the slowly darkening sky.

Inventing the story as he turned each page. The fox. The bird. The mountain. The stars. By the time he reached the final page... Peanut was smiling so hard her cheeks hurt. "Again." Thomas laughed. "We just finished." "Again." He looked at Elena helplessly. She covered her smile with one hand. "I think you've lost." Honestly? He had. Fair. Very fair. Reasonable actually. So he began again. This time changing the story. Making the fox even more stubborn. Making the bird even braver.

The room went dead quiet when I said I would take the prize, but that quiet did not last. A second later, laughter thundered through the air. I ask, my tone bored, not finding his jokes funny. My mind went blank.

Shin and I both poker-faced to that joke at the same time so I immediately drew a long line on it. "Knock! Knock!" - Me.

He exclaims. "Okay you know my story, what's yours?" I've been wondering how he got into it, and now my nosy side can gain some info! "Funny story actually, Cole was mixed up way before me. I started getting bored of playing basketball so I was like 'what's the worst that could happen?'" "That wasn't a funny story." I cringe.
