She tells me about Elijah and how he moves like a hyperactive spider monkey on steroids. I tell her how Rock once tried to seduce a warrior wolf’s wife just to steal her steak. We laugh more than I thought possible. But eventually… the jokes run out. The quiet settles. And the air changes. Madeline lies back on the blanket, staring up at the slowly darkening sky.

Inventing the story as he turned each page. The fox. The bird. The mountain. The stars. By the time he reached the final page... Peanut was smiling so hard her cheeks hurt. "Again." Thomas laughed.
