"The girls and I are planning to do some shots later on. I'm going to show them my party trick." Mom gripped her forehead and groaned. "No, Mom, nobody wants to see you do that." Caleb looked to me apprehensively, whereas Aaron's eyes spread wide with intrigue, as did Dylan's. I rolled my eyes. "Don't get too excited, it's just the match bar trick."

He was watching me intently while looking directly into my eyes. There were two girls beside them but his focus is on me. I climbed myself up to the middle of the pole and did a front hook spin. While I was doing it I did not leave my gaze on him too. This is what you want huh... I did a variety of tricks like slides, spins and legworks. When the music stopped I pretend like I'm going outside, but he suddenly called me. "Leave," He told the two girls beside him "Sit here," He said staring at me.

My mind went completely blank for a second, buzzing like it had short‑circuited. I’d been tricked. This whole setup was tailor‑made to trap me.

While he does that, I slide my foot into position again and push it toward his waist. He instinctively lowers himself. Immediately, I place my glove against the side of his neck. He smirks. “You’ve got it.” I do a little happy dance, excitement bubbling through me. I can already imagine using that trick. He chuckles at my celebration. “I’m off to lift now. Have fun.” We exchange a quick smile before leaving the ring. I head toward the treadmill at the back of the room and start jogging. The music they’re playing isn’t my usual taste, but it definitely keeps me moving.

A night of YouTube and a little practice at home, I was sure I could pick it. My phone vibrated again. Jace: Are you even paying attention to this??? I rolled my eyes. Me: yes, asswipe. I fixed that fast. Grabbed a blade, sent it spinning straight into a dummy’s chest. After that, they remembered who I was. Now they joke with me, call me “boss lady,” beg for the knife trick—the one where I flip the blade before it lands, just right. That’s my favorite. It’s sharp. Smooth. There’s control in it, even when everything else is wild.

So I dropped down and hung from the sides of the beam instead, pulling myself across hand over hand. By the time I hauled myself up on the other side, my arms felt like they were on fire, but I was uninjured. These tiny burns would heal faster than me trying to predict the timing, which I knew I wouldn't get right. I could hear a guy coming up behind me. He was gaining on me. He probably copied my swinging trick from earlier. And if he did, I'm sure others would too. So I needed to increase my pace. The crushing walls were next. I had only one trick, which was running like hell while praying to the goddess.

Still, we maintained a casual relationship. I will need a distraction, maybe a small one. I remember watching magic tricks on television when I was small, and one lesson you have to take away from it is that you are making your audience look in another direction but there is something you are executing in the other direction without them being aware. If I could get my hands on the card, I might be able to test it tonight on the door. But that was a gamble, and I didn’t have enough information yet. No, I’d need to wait for the perfect moment. I took out my sketch and stared at it, wondering if my plant would work or if I could trust Marie. Or trust anyone in this house.
