“Do you have a specific book in mind to borrow today? Or are you looking for a recommendation?”
She leans against the mahogany wood of the counter, looking entirely at home. “Not really, dear. I just strolled by and thought I’d keep my new friend company for a while.”
I blink, my hand pausing over a stack of mystery novels. Me? A new friend? I think to myself, my eyes instinctively darting around the empty, cavernous space of the library to see if she’s talking to someone standing behind me.
“Yes, you are my new friend,” she says firmly, as if I had spoken my doubts aloud.
