Arabella whispered, her voice quivering. To her astonishment, she observed the metal bars starting to dissolve as she clutched them with her hands. With caution, she eased herself out of the cage, an overwhelming warmth coursing through her veins. The heat within her intensified, her gaze drawn inexorably to the flames dancing around her. Then, as if by some enchantment, the fires surged forth with intensity, as if the ancient power of the Phoenix spirit had ignited within her. Turning slowly, Arabella fixed her eyes on the two majestic wings—flaming red and shimmering gold. Her heart raced as the realization struck her: she possessed the ability to manifest wings, just like Orga.

I slumped forward, attempting to claw at the ground beneath me as the entity within my back writhed beneath my skin. "Fly, Bella. Keep striving to unfurl your wings. They are nearly free. They are exquisite - a deep cerulean and purple with intricate gold patterns. They are tailor-made for you. The wings of a queen," she praised, though I could hardly register her words amidst the excruciating torment I was enduring. My back arched and then dropped as a sob escaped my lips. Ara knelt beside me, gently massaging my back in an attempt to coax my wings to emerge.

The darkness inside him would have spotted it a mile away. Azalea chuckled as she stepped back away from him. Maverick's eyebrows knit together, and he tilts his head, trying to figure out what she's doing. His eyes widened and he sucked a breath in when her eyes began glowing white and her wings appeared, spreading wide open. Maverick stumbles backward and falls as he looks at her in shock. She quickly pulls her wings back, and they disappear. She moves forward, bending down to reach for him, but Maverick jerks away. He quickly stands and backs away.

Control. This was my domain. I wore the floral collar Ofelia had bribed me into with a piece of grilled chicken. Daisies. A touch of lavender. Something pale and pink I couldn’t identify, but it didn’t offend me. It sat lightly against my fur, and I tolerated it because it matched the mood. And because I looked good in it. Obviously.

I tipped a single drop onto her wrist. The light came faster this time. It didn’t ease outward, but rather erupted, white and gold and staggering, climbing up and up and spreading wide. And within it, unfolding from her back in a rush that pushed me back a full step, two wings extended: enormous, white, spanning the width of the hut from wall to wall. I gasped, both hands flying to my mouth. Melissa stared at me, her eyes wide. “What? What is it? What do you see?”

Horns curved back from his skull, dark and ridged, cutting through the air as they formed, framing a head that no longer resembled anything human, casting warped shadows across the chamber walls like something crowned in ruin. His wings. Not the broken ones he had forced back. New ones. They tore free from his back in a violent, explosive surge, larger, heavier, their structure thicker and more resilient, the membranes stretched between them darker, veined with a faint, molten glow that pulsed faintly beneath the surface as they expanded fully, filling the chamber with their span, the air shuddering under the displacement. This time, they held.

I asked while glaring at George. "Dirty secrets!" George said and winked at me, making me want to puke. "Huh! Stop pulling her legs George! Now let's start our game!" Hailey exclaimed. Tom started spinning the bottle which stopped pointing at Hailey. "Truth or dare?" Tom asked Hailey. I took a bottle of water and struggled to open its cap with a single hand. Sensing my struggle, Hailey loosened her grip on my other hand, still not releasing it. I sighed and opened the cap while hearing her say "Truth."

I watch from the bedroom window that overlooks the gravel driveway on the front of the old dilapidated mansion as the scene unfolds below me. The storm had passed and the stars were starting to shine as the sky became clear. With the moon shining bright it was very easy to see the ground below me. I kept searching the tree line for any sign of the wolves that I had seen earlier as I watched Noah threaten Jacobs in the gravel driveway.

The JSS 1 students were oblivious to the happenings around them and were made to join in the unending applause, at the signal of the principal. Right from the moment she answered the question, Ayo knew she was right. She remembered reading it somewhere in a story book. ‘Nightingale flew across the sky.’ That was the sentence she was going to state, before it was cut short. She could remember vividly. As inquisitive as she was, she’d immediately checked up the meaning of the word in her dictionary. Still, when the students applauded, Ayo let out a soft smile. Nonetheless, she wanted to leave the podium as quickly as she could but it seems the principal has other plans.
