When she died, something in him changed, as if the ground beneath his feet had cracked and he was trying to stand on broken earth. Not long after her funeral, the nights turned strange. Around midnight his door would fly open and Horris would burst into the yard barefoot, eyes wild, tears running down his face. His voice carried through the whole of Ashwood. “I don’t want to go! I don’t want to go!” he would scream, fighting against hands trying to hold him back. Men rushed from their homes, women peered through windows, and Kaelith and I stood shaking in our doorways as he struggled and sobbed. Every night it was the same words, the same terror in his voice.

The next second, the Patchwork Monster tore the man in half. He tossed the body outside casually. Just then, a crisp, bell-like voice sounded outside. “It’s after work hours, who’s so rude as to be throwing bodies around?” A young girl with three heads and eight arms appeared at the doorway. With just one look at the shop, anger filled her voice, and her hair stood on end. “Who the hell had a death wish and smashed the Number One Must-Eat shop in the entire horror game?”

We run out to check what’s going on and we couldn’t believe our eyes—the town is burning, people getting killed by the reanimates As if that’s not enough, the Big Foot mechanical statue Haley mounted in front of our house is gone—leaving only big footprints. I have read a lot of horror novels and movies as well, including documentaries, and I know that most murder and evil happen in the woods. Why is Logan taking me into the woods? Does he want to kill me there so that no one would know and feed my dead body to a bear? What other cruel and mean thing does this monster have in mind to do to me that he has to take me far away into the woods? Who will help me when I scream? How do I run away? What if there are boars and bears and snakes everywhere I look? Goosebumps gathered in my body at the mere thought of snakes. Damn, I hate that reptile!
