Chapter 14: The Prince’s Gambit The night had turned ominously still, the kind of stillness that wrapped itself around the world like a heavy cloak, stifling and oppressive. The air inside the castle felt thick, weighed down by something Karina couldn’t name, but felt in every corner of her being. It was a feeling she had become accustomed to since coming here—the ever-present tension that clung to the halls of Zorana Castle, the feeling that something *dark* was always lurking just out of sight, waiting to explode.

Drago had a death grip on her arm, trying to calm her, but who could be calm at a time like this? The golden beast lumbered toward them, then stopped directly in front of Drago, letting out a low growl, steam puffing from it’s huge nostrils. When Drago growled in return, Madchen jumped, trying to free herself from Drago’s grip, but he wasn’t letting her go.

But somewhere in all of this, I began to notice how much more it was becoming. It wasn’t until one particularly dangerous mission that I felt the full weight of our connection. We had been sent into the heart of a heavily infected zone to retrieve some critical data, and we found ourselves face to face with a horde of zombies. It was a close call, one that nearly cost us everything.

Selena didn’t know how long it had been since Theo, with all the grace of a gremlin godparent, grabbed her by the arm and hurled her face-first through a magical door like he was tossing a sack of mildly cursed potatoes. Now here she was—cheek smushed against the dusty, mossy floor of what looked like a half-abandoned temple from a low-budget horror film. Her dignity had clearly been left behind somewhere between the ER and whatever cursed GPS coordinates this shrine belonged to.

For a brief moment, he considered running, but the men behind him made it clear that running would be a terrible idea. Paulo stepped aside and gestured toward the entrance. “Go in.” Lewis swallowed hard as he accepted his ill fate. Slowly, he walked inside with the hope that if he attended to the woman on time, he would be able to leave. ***** The inside of the mansion was just as intimidating as the outside. Shining marble floors, high ceilings with diamond chandeliers. The paintings on the walls looked older than the building itself. Also, it smelled expensive. But none of that mattered to Lewis as he was ushered into the hallway.

Mission complete boss. Love, Alec. • "I turned around for 2 seconds and I heard a gunshot. I looked and saw Alec on the floor, gun in his hand and in a pool of his own blood." Lilith told Malakai in a lifeless, void and empty voice when they were in the hospital. Her words would stay with him forever. Lilith had lost, she was defeated by something so heartbreaking but as simple as death. She lost her life. A piece of her died too. And it wouldn't ever come back.

"Go to Aunt Cleo!" Aqua's heart pounded in her chest as she stumbled towards the door, her legs shaking with fear. She glanced back to see her parents fighting valiantly, their magic clashing with the dark energy of their attackers. Milak's elemental fury and Zara's healing light intertwined in a beautiful yet tragic dance of power and sacrifice. But it wasn't enough. Milak fell first, a blast of dark energy striking him down. Zara's scream of anguish pierced the air as she knelt beside him, her light flickering and fading. The witches closed in, their laughter echoing like a chorus of nightmares.

She appeared cunning for the first time. “Help? Either you are naïve, or you have great faith in me. Witches don’t help, girl. They deal.” Zelda said and stood from the mattress. She moved around and touched the vines. The twigs shook letting out the same hissing sound again. The beautiful flowers all turned dark. Black. Pitch-black. They were dead? “No, they aren’t dead. They had always been black, dark. But I like their vibrant colors.” Zelda phrased reading my thoughts.

Zelda, immersed in the joy of impending shopping, remained oblivious to the malicious pheromones. She felt Paisley's grip on her wrist loosen—her crimson pheromones surged, and she bounded down the stairs with a roar, her aura shaking the first-floor tiles. Zelda froze, her wolf ears twitching. Paisley stood before Sabrina, her crimson pheromones blazing like wildfire. Her pupils narrowed into molten vertical slits, and her wolf claws faintly gleamed with silver. "Who are you talking about? Spit it out. No beating around the bush."
