Outside the door, someone let out a soft wheeze and immediately pretended it was a cough.
Vanessa realized she’d laughed, startled, like she wasn’t sure how it happened. She brought a hand to her mouth.
“I...sorry. I don’t know why...”
“Oh no,” I said, waving her apology away. “Don’t worry. Everyone laughs at me. It’s my natural superpower. That, and being aggressively average at running.”
She actually snorted.
Real, present, involuntary. I grinned at Vanessa, warm and bright.
“There it is,” I murmured. “A real smile.”
