I shook my head and went to sit across Audrey. She was laughing at the quotes on the wall. “These are hilarious,” she said, reading one aloud: ‘I don’t need you to brag about me, I just don’t want you to deny me in front of people. – FART!’ Her laughter burst out, filling the café. I just stared, completely captivated. Every laugh, every sparkle in her eyes, it was contagious. “Here’s another one!” she giggled. ‘What a life! Eggs every single day… eggs, eggs, eggs… Do you know who said that?’ Her eyes gleamed mischievously.

But his eyes… they stared right into her, full of something she couldn’t name. Then he spoke, slow and deliberate. “Well, I wouldn’t be sure of that,” he said, his voice thoughtful and calm. “What if another wealthy guy came along?” Ava raised her eyebrows, a flicker of humor dancing in her eyes despite the sadness. “You know there’s a saying right? You can’t step in the same dog shit twice,” she said with a grin, her voice playful, but her pain still there underneath. Liam laughed, his eyes crinkling more now, a genuine laugh bubbling up from his chest.

When my joke lands she tilts her head back to laugh, shaking her head as she looks at me. "You're ridiculous." She says. "You're smiling." I respond. She gives me that warm look again and I wonder what's going through her mind at this moment. "You got any other ones?" She asks and I wrack my brain for any other dad jokes. "Um... The circus lion ate the clown but didn't finish." I say. "Why?" She asks. "Because he tasted funny." I respond and Harper chuckles again. "More." She teases, but I just shrug.

I knew what I said was crazy as soon as it came out of my mouth but I did not expect the outburst of laughter from Narin after I had dropped my incredible idea. For a full minute, Narin was a cackling mess and her laughter was punctuated with coughs and wheezes so infectious, that I could not help but join in her laughter. “Oh my gosh, Nyx!” Narin managed to voice out amidst her round of laughter. “I know I said to voice out the first thing that pops into your mind but I definitely did not expect something as outrageous as that…I love it!” “Why, thank you, Miss Narin.” I mock-bowed, earning myself a kick from Narin.

‘Of course, it’s not her fault. ‘I just enjoy being pampered by her.’ When she noticed him cheering up, she let out a sigh of relief. She stood up and went to lie on a couch. “Ugh, it takes so much effort to coax my hubby. The old saying is right. They said men are the most difficult to coax!” Everett frowned, “Oh, really? Did they really say that?!” “Yes!” Ninian swore, “I should change my name to Old Saying. I’ll write down all these words and make them a sacred heirloom. It’ll become a classic famous saying a thousand years later.”
