Not dead. But close. Efficient. Clean. Controlled. I step out of the car slowly. Silence greets me. Heavy. Tense. Wrong. “She was here.” No hesitation. No doubt. Because I can feel it. In the air. Readers, the next few chapters are a short story that happens after Book 2. Rick looked around the isle after he arrived, wondering what he was doing here. He longed to be back in the States. He wanted to taste the sweet, warm blood of humans running down his throat. Here, he could have as many throats as he wanted, but it wasn’t the same. The hunt had been a high for him. Even as a human, he had loved to hunt deer, turkey, and more.

But Edna, now a seasoned warrior, saw through their machinations, her intuition guiding her towards her mates, Marcus Lumberton and Derek Haligan. Edna walked through the fiery landscape of hell, her feet sinking into the hot, ash-filled ground with each step. "Let's get those damn trackers out of us." We waited an extra day, just in case more came. The mountain remained eerily quiet, the snow undisturbed except for the tracks we had left behind. By the time the sun began to dip behind the trees, casting long shadows across the frozen ground, we were packing up and heading down. The whole thing felt wrong. Orin. Jade. Werewolf hunters turning into what they hunted? All of it felt off. What was the point of it all? The truck came into view, buried under a layer of snow, and I couldn’t have been happier to see it.

I was heading to the place where those girls were killed. He had tracked me somehow and I needed to make sure there was no other evidence there. It was a trek, I had forgotten how far out it was. We were never stupid, the location changed each time. We didn’t need anyone coming after us. But without a car, I had to walk. Stepping through the trees to the abandoned building, there was an odd scent in the air. What was it? It had an aroma of death, mixed in with something sickly. Like a wolf but it definitely wasn’t. Wolves had more of a dirty smell.

Frustration mounted as I moved deeper into the forest, my urgency growing with every second. After what felt like an eternity of searching, I found a small clearing where the forest floor was littered with trampled vegetation and broken branches. The remnants of a fierce battle were evident—claw marks gouged into tree trunks, patches of fur caught on the bark, and the unmistakable scent of blood lingering in the air. I recognized this as the place where Baird had fought the rogues. The ground was still damp with blood, and I shuddered at the thought of what he had endured.

The thought made me jerk my hand away from his grasp. "That...was unexpected" I whispered, saying the truth. I really haven't entertained the thought of Luca holding a gun in front of me. It was my first seeing him with it. "What was?" He smirked, his eyes dying to tease me. "The boar or the gun?" He asked. "Everything" I shot him a glare. "Why would your mansion lead to a forest?!" I yelled, taking it on him for making me go through these few minutes frustration. "It's not a forest. It's a hunting ground" He said, his tone showing how proud he was of his scary and dangerous hunting ground.

Kendra twisted in the saddle so that she could better see the trail behind her. She and Rex had left their home at dawn on their hunting trip to a new and unexplored area. Interestingly enough, the grounds were lush with plant life in comparison to most of the areas that they’d been hunting in, yet there was absolutely no game to be found. At first, they’d thought that it might be due to an abundance of zombies about, but they’d yet to come across a single one of them.

The pocket-sized book Skye had shown me had filled in the gaps in my knowledge, and, at long last, we knew what we were hunting. Herb’s warning had also gone right over my head. Large, crowded events, full of people, were a breeding ground for violence and torment. Skye had left me the book – though we’d been hidden from the Clan’s eyes and ears, his family, his pack, would still worry if he’d been gone too long, which he already had been; as such, he’d had to leave soon after explaining what he and Rowan and Rosie had found in the tiny book. It didn’t look like much, faded and crinkled and tea stained as it was, but it held all of the information that would – hopefully – help us bring down

I double checked my stuff before I followed him outside. "I'm ready, father." I told him. He nodded and escorted me to the carriage. The hunting grounds were near the border to the east. It was still under the territory of our Empire and the animals living there were regulated so there won't be too many dangerous animals there. The point of this hunt is to capture animals to prepare for the long winter nights. The other knights who choose to participate can sell their hunts and others use the hunt to prove their strength. This is usually the time when knights convey their love for their chosen maidens. I'm only participating because I don't want to deal with fake ladies.
