It was childish, but he turned with a loving smile when his “little girl” hung on his neck with a silly grin. He embraced me, and I sank into his chest, feeling safe and secure. “Mia, I am so happy you decided to visit us.” My father said, and I looked up, but my smile dropped at the way his beard was turning gray. “He can’t grow old! Nor my mother. They will live forever!” I thought, caressing his beard in a short-lived silence.

"That's good, isn't it?" "It's terrifying," I admitted. "Because it means we might actually get that future we imagined. Old age. Grandchildren. Peace. And some part of me is waiting for it all to shatter. For the other shoe to drop. For the universe to remember that we're not supposed to have this much happiness." He pulled me close. "Then we'll be terrified together. We'll wait for that shoe together. And if it never drops? If we actually get to grow old and boring?"

"Add something to it. Something I haven't put there." I thought about this. "Growing old in this territory," I said. "Specifically growing old. Not the idea of it. The actual version. My hair going grey and your freckles multiplying and Nyx becoming insufferable in a completely new set of ways and the bond between us having accumulated sixty years of kept moments." I paused. "That is what I want to add." She looked at me across the sitting room with the fire between us and the bond carrying everything that could not be said with the precision it deserved.

"And it is all because of you." She smiled. "Same here, my love." "I cannot wait to see what the future holds for us," I said, kissing her again. "I cannot wait to watch our family grow, to grow old together, to live this life side by side." "Me too, baby," she said, smiling warmly. "It is going to be wonderful."

"We have been through a lot." I nodded. My chin touched the pillow. "We have." "But we are still here." I moved closer. My chest touched his chest. "We are still here." He put his hand on my back. His fingers spread. "I want to grow old with you." I kissed his forehead. His nose. His lips. "You will." "In the new house. In the garden. With the tomatoes." I laughed. It was quiet. Just a breath. "With the tomatoes."
