Raoní e Zaltana são gêmeos não idênticos. Entretanto, na cultura de sua tribo Kanaparís1, uma das crianças terá que morrer pois uma delas representaria o mal. Mas, devido ao missionário Edberto Fonseca, que iniciava o seu trabalho de evangelização na tribo, uma das crianças foi sequestrada por ele e, por ironia do destino, acabou sendo criada pela tribo dos Oniakês1 que são inimigos declarados dos Kanaparís.
