The cold beneath me feels like ice penetrating straight through to my bones and the metallic taste of blood lingers in my mouth. I force myself to remain motionless, hoping that if I appear unconscious, Blaze might leave me alone for a while. I’m not sure how long I remain like this until I feel something slowly coming toward me. Then a rough hand creeps along my body. In the blink of an eye, there's the sound of my shirt being torn apart, the fabric flying away and exposing my cold body to the frigid air. Heavy and labored, resembling the raging hiss of a predatory animal reach my ears.

He thrashed, yelped once, went still. Humans, actual villagers, huddled in doorways and behind overturned carts. A woman clutched two children to her chest, her mouth open in a silent scream. An old man brandished a pitchfork like it might actually do something against claws and fangs. It didn’t. A passing wolf swatted him aside like a doll. He hit the ground hard and didn’t get up. My stomach lurched. This was my opening chapter. I’d written the raid. I’d described the way the alphas circled each other before the first blood was drawn, the way the village elder had begged for mercy and been ignored, the way the moon had hung fat and low like it was watching the slaughter for entertainment.

The Attack It began with a pane of glass shattering. The kitchen window exploded into a thousand pieces, and two men rolled in, pistols in hand. Dante fired first, taking one down. The other took cover behind the kitchen island. At the front door, the three men were forcing the lock. Enzo moved toward them, firing through the woodwork. A scream had hit him. Elena covered the rear, watching the back windows. It was total chaos. But then, a voice. "Cease fire!" Everyone stopped.
