The first howl came at dawn. It wasn’t one of ours. It was guttural, wrong—like something dead trying to remember how to sing. The sound cut through the morning mist like a blade, silencing the forest in a single breath. Birds stilled. The wind died. Even Nyx went stiff in my chest, ears pinned back, hackles raised. Mara burst into my cabin a moment later, still half-shifted, her eyes golden and wild. “They’re at the eastern ridge,” she growled. “Cursed ones. Four, maybe five. We don’t know if they’ve crossed the border yet.”

We left the cabin behind, the keys left in the mailbox for whoever found the place next, and drove his old pickup truck forty miles south to the edge of the neutral territory. We checked into a small, unnamed brick inn that catered to wolves who had chosen to walk away from the pack hierarchies. There were no titles here, no Alphas, and no declarations of war. The lobby smelled like old woodsmoke and wet wool, and the old innkeeper didn't even ask for our last names when Rohan handed over a couple of crumpled bills for a room on the second floor. The room was small, with a sagging mattress and a single window overlooking the dark, mist-shrouded valley below.

I replied with a roll of my eyes. Alpha Cadell held a ball in his very fancy, and extremely huge, mansion. He said it was a celebration for his arrival at the new town. I was sure it wasn't only that. "Just keep your manners. We will be in and out before you even know it." Morgana stressed, and nodded her head at some woman with a winged face mask. Did I mention that this is a masquerade? We live in Midwick, Virginia. A very small and very beautiful town, which one would feel was built right in the middle of the woods.

After a short walk they came to a stone building with an old wooden sign hanging above a porch. Swinging in the night air, it read: The Red Boar Inn—You Rest While We Work. They carried the heavy emperor inside and set him down. Jullious continued to hold him to keep him from falling to the floor. “Can I help you?” a plump old woman asked from a seat across the hall. “Yes.” Velsusi stepped forward. “We need three rooms for the night.”

"I don't think anybody's been up here in a while." At the sound of Pru's voice, Kennedy scrubbed a hand over her wet cheeks. "It seems to have escaped Mom's last deep clean." Pru came into the room, wrapping an arm around her shoulders. "What's wrong?" "I was just thinking how sad it is. I mean, apart from all the obvious reasons, but this is the end of the Misfit Inn." A bittersweet smile curved Pru's lips. "I'd forgotten about that." She looked around the room. "Joan's Misfit Inn, home for the wayward."

The trees had grown huge, and their leaves blocked the sun… Rain stiffened and looked around. Redwoods. She was in a redwood forest. Ferns and moss provided a soft cushion on either side of the faint dirt path. Mushrooms the size of ottomans dotted the forest floor, adding splashes of red. A wolf-like creature wove in and out of the trees, a silent watcher to her personal drama. Rain just stood there, looking, ignoring the snow melting into her socks. Fallon smiled and handed her a pair of shoes, then slowly peeled off her gloves. “Welcome to the Dark Lands. We’ll pitch this stuff back through the gate, then I’ll take you up to the Citadel and introduce you around.”

Bruce had joined them on the porch. “What if they don’t wake up?” Trevor asked and hiccupped. They saw flashes of light come from what looked like downstairs. A woman emerged with a man following behind her. They were in their pajamas and carrying flashlights. The woman went to the front desk. The man came to the door. He unlocked what sounded like two deadbolts and opened the door. “Welcome,” the man greeted. “I’m Horace, one of the innkeepers. I take it you need a couple of rooms.”

He pulled into the gravel parking lot, the crunch of stones under the tyres a stark contrast to the polished marble of the main assembly hall they had left behind. The lobby was housed in a small, separate structure built to resemble a miniature control tower. Inside, the decor was a charmingly eccentric mix of aviation memorabilia and kitsch. The desk clerk, a kindly man with a name tag that read 'Skipper,' looked more surprised to see a couple dressed in high-end couture than to be working at an aeroplane motel. "Welcome to the Jumbo Jet Inn," Skipper drawled, barely glancing up from his paperback. "We'd like a room for the night," Rahul said. "Do you happen to have anything... unique?"
