MAVERICK Silence suffocates the room after Jasmine speaks. “The bond has awakened.” The words settle heavily in the air like a death sentence. Jax is pacing wildly inside my head now. “She saw something.” I know. And judging from the fear in Elder Miriam’s eyes, whatever Jasmine experienced is far worse than any of us realize. Jasmine looks shaken to her core. Her breathing is uneven, and she keeps staring at the shattered glass on the floor like she’s terrified another vision might appear.

“That dude, Skylar is a piece of shit that gets scared easily, dude, for real, cries at everything “. “And how would you know that ?”. “Well he kind of lives in my neighborhood “. Jason replied me. “And you see, around Halloween, last year, dude was stepping around my property and got scared of the skulls in front of my house “. “I was there “. Harper said with an amused grin on his face. “We tried to convince him that it was just decorations but he didn’t believe “. “He didn’t believe because you jacked him up with a skeleton first”. Jason retorted.

“We're being hunted.” He stared at me for a long moment. Then his expression hardened. “You're being paranoid.” “I'm not.” “We've had patrols out all week. No sign of Lycans. No sign of the rogue king."“Then your patrols missed something.” “Lyra—” “Nicholas, please.” I grabbed his arm. “Just listen to me. For one moment, stop treating me like a scared omega and listen.” His eyes flicked down to my hand on his arm. Then back to my face.

Jax looked at me with a serious expression. “Of course I do! I wasn’t born yesterday! It means when you’re scared of something, like I fear my father for example.” I through my hands up in the air. Jax chuckled and took my face in his hands softly making me look directly at him. “No honey. The word fear is more of an acronym.” I scrunched my face up in confusion. “Ok now you got me 38 shades of confuzzled fucked. Explain yourself.” Jax laughed and dropped his hands. “You’ve been hanging around Alida WAY to long hun. She’s rubbing off on you.” He said as he got up to get a pen and paper.

Anyone would tremble in fear when faced with six high-ranked zombies and a few low-ranked zombies. Lucas let out a smile. "If you feel afraid, then let me tell you this. Never feel afraid because whatever I do will only make you terrified for three whole days and nights." A jolt coursed through Cherry's body. 'Whatever he does?' 'Does that mean it's Lucas who made those high-ranked zombies appear?' Cherry looked at Lucas, terrified. Fear coursed through her body, and she could swear that it was her first time feeling so scared in her life.

My heart began to hammer in dread in my body. What is happening to me? I thought. Fear and confusion mixed in my head. The feeling got stronger, like something inside wanted to get out. I walked unsteadily to the nearest chair and sat down. I tried to calm my racing thoughts. I closed my eyes and inhaled deep to stop the storm inside. But it did not help. The feeling only grew, with heat and energy running through my blood. "Stop it," Jasper said in a low growl. His eyes turned a bright red. His nails started to grow long, and his teeth too.Was he shifting now?

"Jaris slept with so many women in the past. Don't worry, there's nothing special about me." She left the kitchen. Her words had barely sunk in when I heard a growl from the living room. I ran like my life depended on it, and just like I feared, it was Jaris losing control again. He was on his knees, his hands continuously pulling at the chains. He wanted to break free by all means. Yet, that wasn't the scariest part. It was his eyes. They were completely red—a thick kind of red. One that was beyond his Alpha's redness.

Jasper's eyes were fixed on the flame, his pupils expanding to absorb all the grey of his irises, leaving the centre of his eyes a blank, hollow black, brimming with unshed tears. Was Jasper afraid of fire? There were no live fires on the facility with the exception of Bunsen burners in laboratories for practical experiments that involved them. There were no candles or stoves that used flames for the sake of health and safety. It would make sense then that he had an undetected fear of fire, but... he had looked so serene and calm gazing out at the lightening on the night of the storm, where Emmet had sought him out for comfort. So what was he so afraid of, if it wasn't the fire?

It takes forever to piece back together but only seconds to destroy. Thin ribbons of fear snake bluely through me like a system of rivers. I need a cloudburst or soothing landscape fast, to still this panic. Maybe a field of dracaena, or a vast stand of sugar pines—generous, gum-yielding trees—to fill our minds with vegetable wonder and keep dread at bay. I swirl around only to see Jasper bending on his knees to peek down and throw to the cracks of the door. I approach him by asking, " What are you doing?"

He expresses. My heart sinks at the realization that I have to go home with this almost stranger, and that in turn, is my biggest fear. What if something sets him off and he turns back into who he was just a few days ago? I look to Jared and he has the same fear in his eyes as I do. The fear I feel is apprehension for being in the same room with someone I know all too well and yet, don't know at all. Who am I going to get once the door is closed, and I'm trapped on the inside?
