We were still on the couch, laughter curling around us like smoke from a too-sweet candle. Kai had just made some stupid joke about me failing at karaoke so spectacularly, it should’ve been illegal.
“Honestly,” he said, shaking his head, “you sounded like a cat trying to beatbox.”
I grabbed a pillow and chucked it at him. “I tried my best, Kai. And you were just as bad!”
“Yeah, but I was charming,” he said, ducking the pillow. “You were chaotic.”
