I stared at it, completely enraptured for a moment, until the murmuring of voices drew my attention back to the ground. The knights were gathered in front of their tent; watching with awed expressions as fairy creatures came pouring out of the forest. Tiernan separated himself from the group and hurried over to stand beside me, hands out to his sides warily, but the other fairies seemed to find no threat among the animals and neither did I. I put my hand on Tiernan's and pushed down gently; letting him know it was all right. He gave me anxious eyes as I stepped forward and was instantly surrounded by the fairy creatures.

I slowly opened my eyes, half thinking I was dreaming. I was the only one that cooked so I knew that no one was actually cooking for me and my bed never felt this good. No matter how good a dream is, we always have to snap back from it. All fairy tales usually have a happy ending, the prince saves the princess from an ogre, a knight in shining armor saves a lady from a hulky brute of a man and so forth. But the world lies, that is not what always happens. Fairy tales rarely have a happy ending. The prince will save the princess and trip down some stairs, fall down and break his neck. Or the lady will live for a few years as a wife to the night and die from child birth. The story tellers never give the actual tale, the sell what appeases to the eye and heart.

He smiled feebly. "Prince charming?" Claire frowned. "On a white horse or something." He shrugged again. Of course he wasn't! Claire laughed. But perhaps he was her knight in shining armor and that's what she needed the most. She was already the queen of her own castle after all. "Don't worry, Ryan Stevens. I'm not one of those beautiful princesses waiting for their prince charming either," she said, and he stared at her for a very long moment, amused. "Maybe I dreamed once for a dark knight in shining armor to come and rescue me, but not anymore." She smiled, even though deep down she was weeping when recalling the times she wanted to just be swallowed beneath the Earth's surface.

Telling the tale of romance that one could only imagine. A romance that seemed to be woven from the great minds of the greatest storytellers in the kingdom. With youngsters listening to the tale, looking out of the store’s windows to gaze at the towering walls of the palace and the infrastructure behind the solid wall. Imagining

Let’s read something happier.” I reached for the book on my nightstand, a massive, leather-bound volume of classic fairy tales that I kept handy for nights like this. I opened it to a random page, settling on a story about a mischievous tooth fairy. My voice was soft and dramatic as I began to read. “...and the fairy, with a flick of her tiny tooth-shaped wand, transformed the hunter’s prize-winning hound into a perfect little frog...”

And somehow, he was treating it with the same quiet seriousness he treated everything else. Tamera pushed the stuffed rabbit closer to the castle. “This is the other princess,” she announced. Lance blinked. “The princess is a rabbit?” “Yes.” “That’s… very progressive storytelling.” Tamera ignored him. She turned toward Ragnar instead, eyes bright with expectation. “The knight has to protect her.” Ragnar looked down at the small figure in his hand, then slowly placed it in front of the block castle as if positioning a soldier. “The knight will protect the princess,” he said calmly.

It seemed I would be the only one paying my respects at this mid-autumn festival. I had not even reached the door when a harsh crash echoed through the air. My chest tightened. I ran inside and saw several workers swinging sledgehammers at the walls. “Stop!” I shouted and stormed in. The house was a wreck. Furniture was smashed to splinters. Lance stood amidst the ruins, seizing my mother's ancestral tablet and smashing it to the ground. Crack! The tablet shattered into pieces. He was not satisfied. He stomped on my mother’s black-and-white portrait, grinding it into the floor.

The dog in me could not take the insult so, I growled proving just how much of a dog I was. He threw his hands in the air in frustration. “It’s either that or I have all of you killed then I won’t have to worry about fairies anymore. Your king will be the stuff of legends. That there once was a specie called the fairies. The books say they used to look like this and that. The story will be told so many times that the truth about your kind will be lost in translation and soon you will all be forgotten. Is that what you want?”
