Smaller. Temporary. Like it already knew we were preparing to leave it behind. “We don’t have to decide everything tonight,” he said. “We just… don’t hide anymore.”

People not trying to kill us. Waking up without expecting something to go wrong first.” There’s a pause long enough that I think he might not answer. Then— “No,” he says honestly. “But it becomes less loud and intimidating." I turn my head slightly to look at him. “That’s not comforting.”

“What about it?” I force myself to smile through the tears, despite my trembling voice. “I’m scared of leaving you and Dad.” The lie suddenly feels close enough to the truth to hurt. “I’m scared that… everything’s changing.” She smiles sadly. “Oh, sweetheart.” “I’ve lived with you two my whole life. “I don’t know how to…” I shrug helplessly. “…leave.” She hugs me again. “You’ll be okay.” “I don’t want to miss everything. What if things change while I’m gone?”

“When I left the villa that night, I thought about just…walking away from all of this. Ruby nuzzled against me, her tiny body warm and comforting. "Sorry," I sighed. "I just—everything is happening so fast. One minute I'm waking up in a new world to save his stupid ass and this stupid world, the next I'm juggling death traps, and now I'm being shipped off to vampire territory like some kind of cargo." Chirp. "Yeah, I'm scared too. But I don't want to let Kealen know that. He's got enough on his plate." Chirp. "No, I'm not being self-sacrificing. I just want to be done with all this and be back to my world. There's a difference."
