She just nodded gently. “Then we’ll start tonight.” She reached for the small storybook she’d brought in, one of Mira’s favorites. “This one’s about a dragon who didn’t know how to roar,” she said softly. “He thought he was broken. But turns out, he just needed someone to listen first.” Milo looked at the cover, then at her, his eyes thoughtful. “Does he roar in the end?”

Chapter 1 Little Li Han, the smallest shrimp in his class, had claimed the absolute perfect spot under the big shady tree at the edge of the playground. He sat there cross-legged with his favorite picture book balanced on his knees, the colorful pages open to the part where the brave little fish discovers the secret coral cave.

There were neat, small sticky notes poking out from almost every single chapter. I opened to the first marked page. In Maverick’s handwriting, there was a note that read: “Does page 14 mean the data moves faster if you shorten the string? Let me know if I got that right.” I stared at the note, my heart feeling so light that I felt like a teenager again. I looked up at him, completely stunned. "Maverick... did you buy a coding textbook?"

I looked at the men around me, and they didn't acknowledge it in the slightest. I watched a little sparrow land on a branch. "I want to see her closer," I heard a voice announce, and it shockingly matched the beak movement of the little sparrow. It practically sang the words along with its birdsong. Narrowing my eyes, I looked around us. My eyes settled on a little chipmunk holding a scrap of food from Ragnar's pack. "The big one is slow," the chipmunk jeered, mouth moving exactly with the words I was hearing.

Unfortunately, he was much faster, swirling away and holding the book higher up, his eyes still trained raptly on the words. “Ivan stop! You’re invading my privacy!” I protested but he didn’t seem to care. He held it out of my reach, flipping through the pages while he read every word and my heart beat rapidly knowing what lay ahead. I tried to snatch the book out of his hand once more, but he spun away from me and I gave up. He flipped to the last page where I’d made a very unflattering drawing of him, one with horns and long knife like fangs.

Then a soft glow flickered in her palm. A miniature bird of light appeared, no bigger than my thumb. It shook itself once, like it was waking up, its feathers glinting faintly silver. With a cheerful chirp, it fluttered into the air and circled my head. I couldn’t help but laugh. “Is that supposed to impress me?”
