The Valancourt family jet touched down at the private airstrip just outside Lyon at a little after nine in the morning, and Celestine pressed her forehead against the cold window and watched the French countryside roll past in shades of gold and green and brown, because it was harvest season and the fields were full of pumpkins and the last of the grapes and the warm autumn light that made everything look like a painting.
