The moon hung blood-red over the Nightshade borderlands, its light veiled in clouds that swirled like ash and smoke. Cole Bennett had ridden through three territories without rest. His wolf was exhausted, his body burning with fever, but his will was unyielding. The mark of the curse, a jagged black vein stretching from his collarbone down his chest, pulsed with each heartbeat. He hadn’t told anyone that it had begun to spread to him. Not even Lila. Especially not Lila.

A faint frown ghosts across his brows. “What?” I ask, voice soft. “That looks fresh.” His fingers lifts, barely grazing the healed-but-still-new bite mark just below my ear. The one from Shawn. “Mmmhmm.” I say, reaching for the silk scarf on the table, and wrapping it loosely around my throat to hide the mark. His eyes meet mine in the mirror, steady and searching. “Is it Shawn?” I hold his gaze but say nothing. He exhales through his nose. “I’ll take your silence as a yes.” he pauses, then quieter, “You’re mated now.”

LAYLA Standing in front of the mirror, I stared at the mark on my neck. Yeah. That mark. You know the one you get after your fated mate marks you with a kiss. Although my mark looked like it, it was literally smoking like a cursed barbecue. Black smoke curled out of it with little flashes of red, like someone shoved a demon inside my skin, but whatever it was, I was so happy about it. My entire existence was not in vain. I finally had a purpose goddess chose me for.

Everyone turned toward the gate. Elara felt the world tilt under her feet. The mark on Darius’s palm burned like metal in her imagination. She had seen marks before—old scars, brandings, signs that men used to keep power—but this had come without ceremony, without consent. It had come with the child's cry. “Who—?” an elder started, voice thin as old paper. Lyra’s hand went to her throat. Her voice came out small and raw. “Not a pack,” she said. “Not plain wolves. Spirits, maybe. Or a pack that walks between.”

It’s done, it happened already, and we can’t do anything about it.” she said calmly, “Just accept the fact that we are the fated one, we exchange blood and vows, and you knew better than anyone that no one could ever cut that bond,”

Reid dropped to his knees beside the corpse, fingers brushing the man’s throat. “He’s dead,” he said grimly. “F**k,” Juno breathed. “We need to inform the Alpha. Right now.” Reid’s eyes narrowed. He leaned in closer, pulling back the collar to examine the wound. “F**king bloodsuckers,” he growled. “They did this.” Juno hesitated. “Are you sure?” “Look at his neck.” Reid pointed. “Those are vampire marks. Fang marks.” But Juno’s gaze travelled lower—her brows furrowed.

When I turned to face him, he was already unbuttoning his black shirt. Tattooed muscle flexed with every movement—his chest sculpted like carved stone, each line etched by the gods. Dark ink curled over both arms—wolves, symbols, ancient script I didn’t recognize. But it was the crystal-shaped marking on the left side of his chest that stole my breath. It pulsed with light. Faintly glowing. “What is that?” I whispered. He stepped forward, voice husky. “My curse. My mark. My fate.”
