Maya stood beside me on the sidewalk, wrapped in a coat that swallowed her frame. The cold Autumn wind was picking up She looked tired deep, bone-level tired but her eyes were sharp, scanning the street out of habit now.

"Nothing." I forced a smile and offered my arm.

The waitress' led us through a maze of white tablecloths and crystal. The place smelled of truffle oil and old money. I kept my hand on the small of Maya's back, feeling the te
