The air crackled, and the barrier wavered, momentarily revealing the twisted landscape beyond before snapping back into place with a sound like thunder. "Quickly!" Thorne barked, and we surged forward. In that fleeting moment of weakness, we passed through the barrier unscathed. But I knew this was only a prelude; the Glade would not relinquish its secrets without exacting a grim toll. We continued, each step fraught with tension. Then the ground erupted without warning, vines bursting forth to ensnare our legs. They were alive, these appendages of the forest, writhing with a hunger for the warmth of living flesh.

Piles of clothes sat on the starting bank, right beside a bright red boundary line. “Oh, this is the Gauntlet,” Reagan said, leaning forward, eyes locked on the screens. “It’s a pure speed run, but it’s entirely unpredictable. They have to decide now: run it as a wolf, or shift and run it as a human.” Emerald eyed the dark, sprawling track. “Which one’s better?”

Ambush points. Aurelia had trained me to hunt wolves. Now I had to use that training to keep two of them alive. The thought sat bitter in my throat. “There’s a drainage tunnel under the ridge,” I said, pointing to a thin line half-hidden beneath Mara’s markings. “It was used before the war to move runoff from the upper farms down to the river basin. Aurelia maps say it’s collapsed.” Mara’s eyes narrowed. “It isn’t.” I looked at her.

I had to shake my head to get those thoughts out and simply focus on what mattered here. Maybe they had found some common ground to bond on and now they were good friends. I wanted to walk away but yet I found myself walking towards her. Them. I couldn't hear Marco's voice anymore but I wanted to believe he was still with her. It would be better for me to see them for myself right now, rather than keeping the thought in my head and letting it eat me slowly from the inside. But it provides excellent cover to bypass the Eldrath pack, which is why we will be taking that path.”
