I glanced at the cover. “Where did you even get this?” I asked. She shrugged. “Found it in the closet.” Right. I’d forgotten I’d left some of my sister’s old books here. The last time I’d sat here, my sister had been with me. We’d hidden from the storm, from Father’s guards, from everything that hunted us. Now I was hiding again — only this time, it was with another person I cared about. I looked down at the page Evelyn had been on. Some romance scene — overly sweet, too easy. And yet, a single line caught my eye, something about the way a man touched a woman like she was the only real thing left in the world.

But it was his tender, understanding patience, which brought me to my knees. Holding my hand against his chest, gently bathing me and holding me while I slept. His fingers trailing over my skin. The plotting, snakelike creature who killed her own father for a shot at the throne.

The book of our lives slammed shut, and a new one opened, but the chapters seemed to unfold at a painfully slow pace. Turning another page didn’t scare me; I was curious to see what came next. The thought of my beast tearing up the pages of my book made me nervous. Despite always feeling guilty when my sister left, she constantly reassured me it wasn’t my fault. She believed in me and encouraged me to lead our pack with an unwavering hand.

Evelyn, as usual, was two-steps ahead, already jabbing her finger in the chest of the Alpha, who apparently was named, “Roman.” “Like hell you’re taking our sister away! I don’t care who you think you are, but she isn’t going anywhere with the likes of you!” Roman looked down on her with benign amusement and said, “She is my mate, and she will come back with me. You will not stop us just because you’re her sister.” Evelyn reared again, ready to drive her point home, when the look of surprise spread across her face, as she felt her father’s hand come down upon her shoulder. “Evie…” he said, “Your sister has found her mate. We should all be happy for this moment that she’s waited so long for.

I tried to explain, but she didn't care at all. She only raised her hand and stopped the assault when I grew dizzy and everything started spinning.

I descended the ladder slowly, still holding the book like it might vanish if I blinked. “I’ve only ever seen one copy,” I whispered. “It was left with me when I was a baby.” She nodded once. “And now you’ve seen the second.” I looked down at the book again. “Do you know where it came from?” I stared at her, the book pressed to my chest like it might anchor me in this moment. “You’re my sister.” Solene’s nod was small, but it shattered the ground beneath my feet. We moved without thinking, both of us drifting to the long table. The fire crackled softly behind us, casting warm light over old pages and newly opened truths.

As he returned to work, I brought him a glass of water, when he just happened to reach out. We touched each other, but he withdrew his hand first and pretended like nothing happened. "Your sister won't survive." There was no doubt about it—anyone who could be objective would be able to see that there was no hope for my sister. Even with that mysterious spell that kept her alive despite losing almost all of her blood, it was just pointless. Two weeks later, the cops found her dried-up corpse in the middle of the street, every last drop of fluid drained out of her body.

Full of bath steam and little footprints.
