Blood spilled from Rheya’s shoulder where Nyra’s claws had torn deep. Rheya screamed, the sound echoing through the hall. “Help! Guards! Someone!” The sound jolted Nyra. Fear clawed through her as she realized what would happen if they saw her this way.

Kaelia followed, scroll tucked at her belt, twin daughter asleep against her chest in a swaddling of obsidian silk. “Stay close,” Nyra called. “Watch for ambushes.” A howl shattered the fog. From every direction, shadowy shapes emerged, Obsidian King’s scouts, half-seen in the mist, blades drawn. The Ironwood wolves howled back, charging. Blades clashed in the gloom. Nyra leapt from her mount, sword bright with lunar runes. She spun, cutting through a band of marsh warriors whose eyes glowed with hellish light. Each stroke was precise, wolf magic granting her speed, infernal power lending weight to her blows.
