The Wrong Kind Of Right
He’d used these hands to pull men out of burning wreckage, to dismantle bombs, to shield lives with nothing more than instinct and brute force.
But they couldn’t hold on to love.
They never could.
A bitter laugh scraped from his throat, dry and without humor. God, he was a cliché.
The soldier left behind.
The tough guy with the broken heart.
He clenched his jaw and leaned forward, elbows on knees, fists curled tight as if he could squeeze the ache out of his chest with sheer will.
“I’m done,” he muttered.
The words surprised him. He hadn’t meant to say them aloud. But once they were out, they echoed like truth.
