"Ah okay, just this one time, Mey." "Thank you!" I smiled. He gave me a brief nod and continued to explain our task, "At the end of the year, each of you shall complete a 30,000 words novella. We would make it a contest, and just like any competition, there shall be a winner. Our English teacher, Mr. Rodriguez, an editor from our local paper, and I would be the judge." Koltin seemed very interested. I watched him eagerly raise his hand before asking, "What do we get if we win?"

Three months of waiting while placing CVs in various companies still did not get results. I never imagined my writing would win that contest and become my money tree now. Lately, if she saw him twice a week, it was a lot. “So, how are things at work? They seem to keep you busy lately.” She asked him, trying to dig a bit. He looked at her and shrugged, “I’ve been approaching e-novel authors for the next big thing. From what I can see, there is an abundance of untapped talent out there and e-novel websites are the only way for them to get their stories out into the world. They have given me 4 months to land a best-seller.”

Estela narrowed her eyes at Dawn but couldn’t see any signs that she was lying. “Alright… Come, dinner is ready..” They had an early dinner and Dawn stayed in her room to start applying to publish her novel. She knew of a publishing company who would accept novels from teens, as long as they used their parents ID which meant they were being supervised. She turned her laptop on and searched the website of the publishing company. Her heart thumped madly as she filled up the forms and sent in an outline and a free chapter to the publishing company. Her finger hovered over the mouse. She pressed down.

She instructed her best friend and rushed to the bathroom. "What's this?" Tasha found something on her desk. she picked up the booklet and turned the pages, "A new novel?" she exclaimed. "Wait!" Arielle shouted from the bathroom, she had the habit to write it down instead of typing her stories, she used her gift to write 2-3 chapters of her new novel last night before going to bed. She rushed out with the toothbrush still on her hand. "Give that to me." "Nope. You're writing a new novel? A romance novel at that?" Tasha ran around the room reading the notes.

Mindy said, "First, web novels are usually really long, often over a million words. Second, genres like urban romance and rich-guy dramas aren't my specialty. How am I supposed to write those? "Isn't the trouble with 'The Green Fruit' enough of a lesson? You told me to change what I was doing, but look what happened." "The Green Fruit" was Mindy's young adult novel that got a lot of criticism. Edith's expression softened as she spoke, "I know that novel hurt your reputation and that you've had a tough time since, even leaving online platforms…" "Yes, and if you know I left online platforms, why are you still asking me to write those romance novels?"

With her words echoing in my mind, I took a deep breath and made up my mind. I would enter the writing contest, not for the sake of winning, but for the joy of seeing my words come alive on paper and reaching out to others. Days turned into nights as I poured my heart and soul into crafting the story for the contest. I spent countless hours refining each sentence, polishing every word until they shimmered with emotion and authenticity. The characters on the page became real to me, living and breathing with every turn of phrase.
