I walked toward the bed slowly before picking it up carefully, my fingers brushing over the numbers. Then I frowned slightly. “This number is different…” In my past life, this wasn't the number he used most often. Did he change it? Or maybe… This was a private number he rarely gave to people. My heart began beating wildly. I quickly sat down on the bed and added the contact to my phone. For a few seconds, I just stared at the screen. Then panic hit me. What was I even supposed to say? I bit my lower lip nervously. Should I text him?

I mumbled to myself. I stared at the phone for more than a minute before my trembling hand managed to pick his number from my extremely short list of contacts. I made the call. Hearing the waiting signals was tormenting. I was taking long breaths, trying to exhale them slowly, but it didn't ease my anxiety. He didn't answer. A heartbeat later, I called again… and then again. I might have been irrational and too demanding, but I thought that I was going to fall apart if I didn't hear his voice. I gave up after the twelfth unanswered call. I wrote a text instead.

The screen glowed with the words: PRIVATE NUMBER. A feeling of dread, colder and heavier than any I had ever known, climbed up my throat and wrapped around it, squeezing. This was bigger than the fear of the police. Bigger than the nightmare of my dead wife. This was the feeling of the other shoe dropping. The final, terrible bill coming due. This was the call you never want to get. I looked at Jaxon over the broken glass. His eyes were locked on the phone, wide with the same knowing terror. I swallowed hard, my mouth dry as dust. I raised the phone to my ear. My voice was a gravelly, unfamiliar scrape. “Hello?”

The phone was dead. My hands shook as I placed the phone carefully on the desk. Nicholas, seeing my face, sprang up immediately. "What is it?" I breathed slowly. "Someone called. They said… the threat isn't quite over yet." Nicholas' face went polar cold. "Give me the number." .I shook my head. "It was private."

I couldn't even think of a thought for long, I felt my legs buckling and my knees giving out as a strange feeling spread over me. The next minute, I found myself hurrying to get my phone. My fingers trembled over the contact list as I quickly dialed her number. But guess what? Her number wasn't connecting. I couldn't help but to dial again, and again, and then again, still the same thing. It went straight to voicemail. That alone made a sudden intense surge of overwhelming fear peek through all over me.
