The witch built it right where an eager body would duck. “Sable’s party favor,” I say as I catch Olive’s sleeve when she steps without thinking. “Wait.” She points anyway, breath hitching. “Trip-line there, secondary there and tertiary,” she swallows, “tied into the rail so if you cut the wrong one you make the whole thing sing.” “Good,” I say. “Now say it again without panicking.” She inhales. The mint on her wrist flares, the key under it settles against her pulse like it’s listening.

“Breathe Jean, you can do this.” My fingers hover over the handle when I hear his voice. “…the future of this bloodline cannot be compromised.” I freeze. I shouldn’t listen, I know I shouldn’t. But I do. “I will not bind myself to a she-wolf who carries a curse,” Seth continues. “A tainted womb weakens the line.” My breath catches in my throat. One of the council members asks, “And if such a woman is already… close to you, Alpha?” “There is no such woman,” Seth replies, unbothered. “And there never will be. My mate will be flawless and my heirs will be strong.”

Four short strokes crossed by a longer one formed a shape that meant nothing obvious to him, but the precision behind it made one thing certain. This had not been done by accident. Oscar ran his fingers carefully over the mark, feeling the faint roughness where the bark had been disturbed. The edges were still sharp. “Recent,” he murmured. Lyra studied the symbol in silence, her brow furrowing slightly. “Do you recognize it?” He shook his head. “No.” The forest around them remained quiet, the distant sound of running water from the stream barely reaching the ridge. Somewhere nearby a bird shifted in the branches overhead before taking flight, its wings beating sharply against the air.

I have to remember that. When that promise echoed in my head, mas lalo pang sumikip ang dibdib ko dahil dito. Not because I found that ring with that initials kundi dahil sa hindi naman talaga O and F ang mga letrang 'yon. But it was actually D and F.. Maaaring nagkamali ako sa pagtanda sa mga letrang 'yon but its form, its design. It was the same as that ring.

I ask, pressing my finger into a slotted line that, while not illuminated, looks like a cross between the number 0 and the celestial symbol for "star." “It wasn’t one of the symbols you asked us to…” “Just tell me,” I frown, and the technician pulls up another color, illuminating just those symbols. Picking up a stylus, I trace a line between one number and the next. It almost looks like…like a triangular prism folded inside itself. I need Orion. I need Tritus. I need someone with a bigger, more complex mind than mine to figure out what on Terra I just traced because the longer I stare at it, the more certain I am that it IS something. Something important.

’ “What did it look like?” “I’m not sure. I was young when I saw it, but I remember the shape. It was…” She closed her eyes, trying to pull the memory from somewhere deep inside her mind. “A circle with three lines through the middle. The three lines looked like stars in you looked too hard.” Aly suddenly gasped. “That symbol.” Zahra turned toward her. “You remember it too?” “I remember Father telling us never to touch anything that carried it.” She answered still with a gasp.

I look back at my case study options and I add a fourth one and then immediately cross it out before I can finish writing it. But the two words are still visible under the single line. False testimony.
