It looks old. He pushes it open. A wave of cold, chemical air hits me so fast I gag. The room is dark, almost pitch-black except for one faint bulb in the corner that flickers like it's struggling to stay alive. The smell is awful. It's thick. Wrong. It smells of bleach, strong enough to burn my nose, mixed with something metallic and sweet. Copper. Old pennies. Blood. It clings to my skin instantly. It seeps into my lungs. My heart beats so hard it feels like it's bruising my ribs from the inside. There's not much inside the room. Just a concrete floor with a drain in the center. Like, how rude! So now, I am trudging the boring fifteen minutes walk home, wondering what is so important that both Tammy and Brad have bailed on me! Okay, time to knock this door in. I took a few steps back and sprinted towards the door, I used all my strength to break the lock and it worked. Mark's apartment was destroyed. Broken furniture, and clothes lay everywhere. The couches were torn apart, pictures and posters were ripped from the walls and a strange smell filled the air that made my head instantly throb. The smell was clean like when Earth women clean their houses with bleach and had traces of extremely sweet fragrances. I felt nauseous but forced myself to search the bedrooms.

I don’t want to lie. “What do you smell? Is it really out of place here?” He then promptly thanked whoever took her along the line of the smell and away from him. “How many people bath their back alley’s in citrus scent? Like someone bathed in it recently.” She had a valid point. His first thought would be that it came from a dumpster, if he didn’t know any better, that it started inside the vet clinic.

Once I focus, I can begin to detect words, a flowing conversation. But mostly it's the smells. I can smell the dust, the air, and the awful smell of my clothes with sharpness and clarity. But even stronger is the aroma of three mysterious objects, each more breathtaking than the last. One looks like peppermint and the other like a delicious ripe banana. But the last one is the most wonderful; a strange combination of flavors that I cannot distinguish, but intoxicating nonetheless. In an instant, I feel a strange connection to this smell, making it different from the others. In a hurry, my feet begin to run excitedly, fleeing towards the source.

"Don't be upset. That young lady just joined the pack. She's a bit of a perfectionist, and she doesn't even listen to me. "She's got quite the personality," he added with a smile. When we got home, he suddenly leaned in and kissed my cheek. I didn't pull away. From the back seat, Joy suddenly said, "Mom, Ms. Sophia smells like Dad." Ethan's smile froze. I forced a calm reply: "Of course she does. Your father's scent would be on his car. It has nothing to do with Ms. Sophia." "Oh." Joy nodded, not fully understanding. I got out to pick her up, trying to stay composed even though my stomach was churning.

The air in my lungs was growing scarce, each breath searing like inhaling shards of hot glass. I could not die there, not like this. With a desperate instinct to survive, I dug into my pocket with the last bit of strength I had and pulled out my phone. “You shouldn’t let down your guard around strangers.” My gaze raked over her and addressed her with a smile that communicated anything but friendliness. “Next time, consider actually masking your scent.” The strong scent of bleach could not be masked by the choking of perfume on her. Vampires were known to do stupid things like that; using everything and anything to mask their smell. Her laugh was low, throaty, unshaken. The kind of laugh that belonged to someone who had already accepted defeat. The elevator continued its ascent, the tension between us coiling tighter than the steel cables pulling us up.

The hospital room reeked of that weird, institutional freshness that's supposed to make you feel better but only seems to make your nose hairs curl. Like someone had poured a bottle of bleach into the walls and then scrubbed the whole place with a mixture of desperation and regret. The TV in the corner droned on about the weather, but nobody was listening. The anchor's voice was sedative though.

It was far heavier than the typical musty smell of a damp closet on a rainy day. Frowning, I backed out, grabbed a can of air freshener, and sprayed it aggressively throughout the room. But when the artificial fragrance masked the stench, it only made the odor weirder. The two scents mingled together, making me gag. Holding my breath, I stepped back inside, determined to find the source of the smell. After only a couple of steps in, my foot suddenly slipped. I looked down and saw a pool of dark brown liquid oozing from a corner. It was coming from the box Alayna had brought home.
