I closed my book and let my fingers rest on the cover for a long beat. The night felt like a small, soft thing around me. I was tired in a way that had nothing to do with the day and everything to do with the last few weeks. People kept saying try to get some sleep, breathe, take time for yourself. It sounded like advice from a different life. Tonight, for the first time in days, I believed it.

We had our clothes and some mementos from the few times we had splurged to go skiing. When we were finished for the night we decided to get some rest, because it would be a busy morning. I laid in my bed thinking of all the things I have learned today and all the things yet to come. I couldn’t sleep, I was wide awake. So what do I do when I can’t sleep? I start singing ‘Just Lose It' by Eminem and of course the guys jump right in with me at “Alright, stop! Pajama time.” Of course we all laugh and joke around for a few more minutes until we are finally able to sleep.

If the rumors are right, we are going to have a pop quiz in the morning, and I barely skimmed the surface of this section! Maybe if I just took a short nap and woke up in about 10 minutes I could continue studying, and maybe I would pick something up and keep it in my sleepy brain. I yawn. I blink. My eyes are so damn water, and everything in my textbook seems to be swimming on the page. Maybe just a quick nap? Then again, I can't guarantee that I'll wake up in a few minutes! I check the clock. Its 2 am. No wonder I'm so damn tired. I wonder if Sandra would wake me up if she came home. A nap wouldn't be such a bad idea. It might keep me from crashing my car... Maybe I just need coffee...

Faith's Pov: I woke with a gasp, my chest tight as if I had just run a marathon in my sleep. The nightmares were relentless, plaguing my every dream. I hadn’t had a peaceful night’s sleep since I was a child. Every time I tried to close my eyes, I was pulled into a nightmare that felt too real, too vivid. I blinked rapidly, my gaze falling to the alarm clock next to my bed. Three in the morning. Of course. I groaned in frustration, flopping back down onto my pillow, my body a tangled mess of frustration and exhaustion.

I wake up the next morning as early as I did yesterday. Maybe even earlier. Sleep and I have been at war lately, and I’m losing badly. No matter how exhausted I feel, my mind just won’t shut off. I’ve tried all the tricks—warm milk, deep breathing, calming music—but nothing works. Last week, my doctor prescribed me some medication to help, but even those feel like a temporary bandage over a wound that refuses to close.
