And I wondered if she was even aware of what Luke was playing at. It may have been the alcohol, but everything that the man seemed to do was downright sensual and very inviting. She felt hot, like there was fire burning right next to her, and her blouse was soaked with her sweat.

She smiled. I watched as Rebecca sat beside her and opened her favorite book. I left, but stood outside the door feeling confused. Rebecca really cared for Anna, as much as I did. I can’t remember Celine ever really showing concern for Anna, or anyone but herself. I went back to her. She had removed her blouse and was relaxing on the lounging chair by the pool, wearing only her bra. Looking at her, I felt irritated, and lost all desire. “You really need to tell that ill-mannered girl who is the boss!” She said as I came in, “imagine the way she was talking to you.”

Let’s keep looking for whatever it is you’re looking for.” I watch her walk back to the bookshelf and slide the black-bound book back in, then she continues to pull out more books and skim through them. Shit, should I have trusted her? I don’t really know her that well, but would she have tried to fool me? Gods, sometimes I wish I were fucking normal instead of this fucked up mess of a man. We spend the rest of the afternoon in stony silence, with Rebecca avoiding my eye and me ignoring her altogether.

A random co worker called out as agreements rose up in the room. Rebecca pressed a palm to her forehead and shook it. “Fell off the radar? More like soared above it! SHE MARRIED INTO THE DIAMON DONATELLIS!” At her announcement, the tea room burst into pandemonium as several of the co workers cried their happiness and many expressed their disbelief. “I’m telling you guys,” Rebecca insisted. “She married the only son. The tycoon billionaire,” When looks of disbelief continued to pass around the room, she hissed and lunged for the TV remote.

By the time she was seventeen, Rebecca had become a young woman who moved with the same certainty as her mother once had, though tempered by the caution that childhood survival breeds.
