She didn’t know what she was looking for. Maybe just a moment of escape. Then she saw it. Nestled beneath an old sketchpad, slightly curled from age, was a small black notebook. The leather was soft, almost fragile. A faint scrawl of ink on the cover read simply: Regan. Her fingers hovered over it for a beat. Then, carefully, she picked it up.

Her eyes, fixed upon me, were burning with a furious mix of malice and defeat. Madre slapped Ella hard across the face before Ella could even get a word in. "Is that how you apologize to someone?
