James followed behind. The large city was deafeningly quiet and reeked of blood. On the ground, corpses were strewn about. Blood had stained the ground red. It was extremely desolate and depressing.

But the image of Marcus’s message burned hotter the flames drawn over her face, the proof that running or hiding would never save her. She slipped her hand into Damien’s. “Take me.” His grip tightened, and for the first time, he looked almost relieved. “Then you’ll see everything.” The ride into the city was silent, the landscape shifting from manicured estates to the restless heartbeat of downtown. Neon lights flickered even in the early dawn, casting long shadows on the cracked pavement. Grace’s stomach churned with each turn, each mile carrying her deeper into territory that belonged not to mayors or police, but to Damien Blackwood.

Not until I'm safe. Turning a corner, I run down an empty street. The Guild chose this town for one of our safe houses because it's so empty. A mill, its main source of income, closed decades ago. Most of the buildings here are closed up and empty. Which means there are very few humans around. For the first time, I question that choice. If there were more humans around to be witnesses, would the Silver Hunters hesitate to attack me like this? Do they even know how to wipe memories?

But I tore my attention away and checked the next on the pile. Primogentius; The creation, was slightly thicker with a picture of what I assumed was the original Primogentius and again I found myself eager to open the book and start reading. Primogentius; Requirements of a secret city apparently detailed all of the work that was required to keep the city running, the thick book was a lot less enticing, but I expected that it would answer a lot of my questions.

Then another crack appeared. Then another. Then another. The city itself was moving. Then the ancient voice spoke. "THE SHIELD ENDURES." Silence. Then: "THE SHIELD ADAPTS." The roads began changing. Buildings shifted. Entire streets rotated. The city was rearranging itself. God. No. Fair. Absolutely not. Reasonable honestly. Then Rowan stared. Then: "The city is cheating." Honestly? Fair. Very fair. Reasonable honestly. Then suddenly— a scream echoed.

“Just don’t disappear too far. I want both of you back later.” Quinn nodded absently before walking away from the alley, Damian following close behind. The rain from earlier had left the streets damp and shining beneath the grey morning sky. Quinn slowed near the quieter side of town, finally stopping beside an old bookstore she vaguely remembered from years ago. For a minute neither of them spoke. Then Damian glanced sideways at her. “You know, normal people usually deal with emotional trauma by sleeping.” Quinn crossed her arms lightly. “And normal people usually don’t follow detectives into murder investigations.”

It floated above the table, its ancient golden letters swirling across its surface like flowing fire. "Dearest reader… let us begin," the book hummed, its voice echoing softly through the room. Levi and Micha sat down opposite each other, bracing themselves. Every session with the Living Book revealed something darker than the last.

One volume called to her like a whisper against bone: *The Greater Veil: Finer Threads of Dominion* She pulled it free. The book was heavier than the black tome from her father’s library, its cover bound in something that looked like polished shadow-leather, warm to the touch. She opened it carefully. The first pages spoke of layered commands, of weaving intent so precisely that the dead obeyed without resistance, of turning even the strongest-willed undead into extensions of the caster’s will. Raven’s breath caught. She looked up at Victoria. Victoria read the title over her shoulder, then met Raven’s gaze. She squeezed Raven’s hand once—firm, reassuring—and nodded.
