On the walls, there were the coat-of-arms of the kingdom and a couple of old steel shields. His master didn’t even turn his head to greet the zombie when he came in to the room and stood behind him. Reive was towering over a frowning broad-shouldered guard with regalia on his breast and shoulders. Papers and a map were spread out on the table in front of them. Zomzom squinted, looking at the map, although he couldn’t understand anything. The royal castle and the surrounding city were clearly depicted. A few red crosses were drawn too, with figures glowing beneath each of them.

There was no response. She crossed the doorway and closed the door behind her. It took her eyes a moment to see clearly. There were large, tall dark wood shelves lined up with leather-bound books and maps stuffed in them from top to bottom, there was an armor rack at a corner dressed in complete armor, a sword stood where the hand was supposed to be. Cleopoda walked towards it and ran her hands all over its silver surface. It was beautiful and cool to the touch, a shield rested at the foot of the rack, and on it was the royal coat of arms, she ran her fingers over the two dark rearing horses standing back to back and the sword that was between, it was beautiful and majestic.

A palace guard stood in the doorway with a folded piece of parchment. He held it out without a word. I crossed the room and took it. The writing was filled with ink, and I could barely read through but still I held it close to my eyes. “Your presence is required in the King’s study at dawn. Come alone”.

He was dressed in an expensive Regalia, so he was royalty. Even the maids that work the palace had never spoken to her nicely, nor called her by her name—she was always being called something insulting—and this royalty was speaking to her this nicely, even apologizing? “Alpha-approved.” “Funny,” the first guard said, eyes narrowing. “Because no supplies were scheduled tonight.” The silence stretched. The rider turned. He never made it three steps.
