“But I want a cat!” Her lips trembled, verging a loud cry.
I lifted my hand, hoping to wipe the tears on her cheeks, but she turned around, stomping her feet and crying as she ran to Callahan.
Rosie groaned, following her sister.
“Cotton’s a good name,” Bernard shrugged. “I have a cat. His name’s Pepper,” he blabbered, curving his lips into a smile in this awkward situation.
“I have a cat, too,” Bethany beamed. “Its name is Marcus,” she joked, anchoring her arm on his. “Beer?”
