Then I headed to the burnt-out forest hilltop. The cold wind cut right through me. The creepy end-of-the-world vibe was getting stronger. I called up some friends to work some magic. Tonight, I’m going to call down lightning to turn all the wood into lightning wood. Infused with the power of thunder and the breath of silver, this wood will be stronger than it ever was before. Right then, I heard James, snickering from behind a tree. "My dear sister, had I known you liked it rough, I would've helped you look. These friends of yours are a bunch of weirdos. They're not even as cool as me."

Power radiates from her in waves—relic magic, I realize, similar to what the Varellan nomads use. The second is a man who looks impossibly old, his skin weathered by time and sun, his eyes milky white. His throne is carved from black opal, and despite his apparent blindness, I have the distinct feeling he sees more than anyone in the room. Shadow magic clings to him like a second skin. The third is younger—perhaps thirty—with the crystalline markings of the Varellan covering half her face in intricate geometric patterns. Her throne is rose quartz, and she watches us with calculating intelligence that makes me want to shift under her gaze.

I folded my hands around my chest, watching as she brought out a pale orb of hazy reddish light and kept chanting, the orb changed into a crimson-red glow before changing into a black light that displayed Asher’s castle. She took out a dark book of magic, flipping through the pages while I watched her in silence. The pages looked paper-thin as if held together just by a spider web thread that would tear at any instance. She closed her eyes and seemed to be doing something with her mind. Her hand hovered over the book while she held one of it in her other hand and began chanting again.

She stares straight ahead, as we walk down the dimly lit hallway. "This mansion is known as the Shade Manor. It was once the center of the blood Fae society. After the Fires of Alira the life that once filled this mansion dwindled. Now instead of being the great meeting hall of the blood Fae, it is simply my home," I ramble, as we walk. "You t-talk as if this place isn't truly y...your home," she replies. "This is the only place I have, since my family is longer around, this place does not really feel like home," I admit.

ADRIAN'S POV I held my chest as I spurted out a mouthful of blood and weakness washed over my body. "Adrian!" My mother's panicked voice rang in my ears, but it sounded so distant. The shade let out an unearthly shriek as her strike connected, dissipating into smoke. “They’re vulnerable to light magic!” Ellara called, sending a burst of radiant energy toward another shade. It disintegrated on impact, but two more took its place. Sara conjured a barrier of flame around herself, warding off the creatures. “They just keep coming!” Cassius fought with ruthless precision, his blade cutting through the shades with ease. He stayed close to Zoe, his movements fluid and protective. Nikola, however, seemed frozen, his eyes locked on the shade taking the form of his younger brother.

Silas, beside him, wove shadows into armor, shaping them into shields that sealed the cracks in the walls. But the hole—the hole kept growing. Dawn lunged, her golden fur a blur, her jaws snapping at a shade, the shadow dissolving, the frost dusting her fur, the plateau a battlefield, the chill a test of their bond. Samantha channeled a surge of magic through her staff, the silver light flaring into a blazing arc, the runes glowing with a radiant silver glow, her green eyes blazing with focus, her voice sharp, the blue glow illuminating her face, the wind howling across the plateau, the marrow shades closing in, the plateau a battlefield, the chill a constant threat. “Target the shards, everyone!” she commanded, her staff swinging toward the nearest ice shard, the silver magic slamming into it, the rune cracking with a sharp snap,

The girl is gorgeous until she sneers at me, her eyes looking me up and down. "Watch where you are going!" She shouts in the most dramatic way possible. "And what are you wearing? If you are a student, you need to wear the color of your house. Aren't you sorted yet?" "Sorted?" I ask. Two other girls are glaring at me from behind the blonde girl, clearly her little minions. They all wear the same blue cheerleading clothes, and blondie got pointy ears—definitely Fae. "At Magic Academy, there are four houses; each one represents an element—as you can see, we all belong in the house of water. It values beauty, but beauty doesn't seem important to you since you're wearing those clothes."
