I could feel my flesh burning and I winced in pain. “Stop running. You’re only going to suffer more,” he said as he entered the broken door. I ignored what he said and continued climbing up the stairs. It only took me a couple of seconds before I reached the line of tables in the very middle. The entire library was not in total darkness because of the light slipping through the glass windows from the outside. I ran to the east wing and hid behind the tall shelves while catching up my breath. The werewolf’s footsteps echoed in the air.

But just as suddenly as it had begun, the rain ceased, leaving behind a hushed stillness. In the eerie calm, a low growl pierced the silence, sending shivers down our spines. Our hearts raced as we exchanged worried glances, our imaginations running wild with fear. And then, emerging from the shadows, a formidable gray wolf stood before us, its eyes gleaming in the moonlight.

It was deep and dangerous. The Shadow Well appeared before her—a circular void at the base of the altar, its surface black like still water at midnight. Wraiths lived there. Luminous spirits born of pure shadow. Priam’s voice echoed faintly, “Reach into the Well,” he said. “Draw out a wraith. Guide it. Show us you are stronger than the darkness you hold.” Alessia’s lungs felt tight. She closed her eyes. She reached inward again. Lux glowed softly, like a small candle.

I wouldn’t let myself be distracted by it and stayed focused. A few more moments passed. A sudden rustling came from my right, and I stood up quickly. Something moved again! What’s that sound? A loud, muffled thud came from underneath me, causing me to tense up slightly. Is that… the Echo Wraith? Or another spirit? Before I could react, a black shadow stepped into view. I blinked to adjust to the dim lighting, and a sharp pain stabbed my chest. I staggered backward, clutching my heart as I gasped for breath. A dark figure approached me swiftly. It stopped and stared at me with empty yellow eyes, its body seemingly engulfed in a black, cloudlike substance. Its entire form radiated a sinister

She pushed the door open just a few more inches, not enough to be seen from most of the room. But enough. “Willow,” she breathed, in a low urgent whisper that seemed to come from the shadows of the door way.” Willow jumped and whirled around. “Who is there?” “A friend,” Sharon whispered as she kept her body hidden in the corridor’s darkness. “Someone who knows what it is like to be used and discarded by men in this house.”

The Shadow was dead. But his daughter – the Whisper – was still out there. Watching. Waiting. And this time… we weren't hunting something in the dark. We were standing in it.
