I had read about shape shifters in old books when I was younger, but I never thought they really existed in our world. Now I knew they were real, and one was here in our pack.

I hadn't even finished a whole row yet. Some stuff is repeated but this book is by far my favorite. It's solely about bear shifters. Bear shifters are the most loyal type of shifter. They would lay down their lives for the ones they are to protect without a single thought. Thats terrifying. I don't want Dom to die because I might. Even though he would probably fight me on it.

From what I hear, they seem to value it very highly. When he finally stops, I also stop at a particularly thick book called Werewolves, Spires, and Shifters: Complete Edition. On the front is a picture of a menacing werewolf ready to devour a human and a human fighting a truly horrible Shifter with a strange spear. I pull it off the rest, hiding it behind me.

Usually, shapeshifters aren't that good in combat but they are great at making strategies and thinking. "Tell me why you've been following her everywhere," I asked with gritted teeth. He coughed a little before answering. "We know she has the book. In order to take possession of it, she must be killed." Shit, they knew. That wasn't good. The way he said we must've meant that the whole shapeshifter race probably knows too. Maybe even other races. "I do not know what you're talking about." Of course, I knew, I just didn't want to admit it openly even though it was making me sound stupid.

His smile turned to one of concern and his face became serious. “What do you mean? You said you never got the shifting gene, so you can’t be seventeen.” My eyes widened at his words. That wasn’t what we were told in school. My voice started to come out shaky as thoughts began racing through my mind. “What are you talking about? That’s basic shifting. We learn that as children when we start school. If a Shifter has not transformed by their sixteenth birthday, then it means the shifting gene is absent, and they were cursed to live as humans.

That was one thing I was very curious about. Growing up, the stories of shapeshifters were always wild. They never said that they were dangerous. In fact, they were described as protectors. They blend in with the human population very well. The stories made it sound like shifting was easy for them to do, there were no struggles. But when I look at these bodies that are being left behind, I see struggle. I see danger. I have gotten familiar with her past. She sounds like a Lost girl looking for a home. We grabbed a corner table, Goose still stealing glances from half the café. “So, what’s this book about?” Ace asked once we sat. “Cat shifters,” I said without hesitation. “Epic romance. Sarcastic hero, rambly heroine, lots of claws and passion.” Ace raised a brow. “Sounds familiar.” My cheeks burned. “Coincidence.”

It's clear she still doesn't trust me, and I can't blame her for that. Whatever she's been through, I think some things have been traumatic for her, and I have a feeling it's related to the men in her life. My mother taught me quite a bit about cat shifters since she's one of them herself. Unlike wolves, cats are more wary of the people around them, so it's better to approach every subject as carefully as possible.
