Bummer. "Whatever." He grabbed a pen- thank heavens it still works- and scribbled down stupid stuff he would probably regret after five more years or so. After that, he took a warm shower and dressed up, putting his camera on its bag and grabbing the car keys. He locked the door and stayed standing in the hallway for a good 789 seconds before crouching and sliding his heartfelt letter at the stranger's door. He scratched his nape and ran towards the nearest flight of stairs.

I told him to get some water from the kitchen. The moment he left, my spoon slipped from my hand and fell to the ground. As I bent down to pick them up, blood suddenly gushed from my nose. I quickly covered it with my sleeve, forcing myself to stand up. I had already prepared a card and a note, which I quietly placed on the dining table. Dr. White, thank you for everything. If it's possible, could I ask you to scatter my ashes in the mountain woods? Please accept the card. I know it's not the best gift, but given our friendship, I hope you don't mind.'

He hesitated and I sensed his weakness, pressing my advantage. “Come on. Please? I’ll be back before anyone’s the wiser. Ten minutes tops. I swear it.” I used my best puppy dog eyes, making a mental fist pump when he sighed and nodded. “Thanks so much.” I gushed and started down the hall out my way to freedom. “Remember, no more than ten minutes.” I grinned at him, “Scout’s honor.” I walked out of the motel unchallenged and went down the road a distance then immediately ducked into the woods on the right of it.

How did you sleep? I read it twice. It is six words. It should not do anything to me. I am a grown man who has survived considerably harder things than a six-word text message, and yet I stand in the middle of my bedroom in yesterday's shirt with coffee I have not finished making, and I feel something warm and stupid happen in my chest. I sit down on the edge of the bed. I type: Badly. You? I look at it for a moment. Then I send it before I can revise myself into something more guarded.

All that was left within me was a void. Maybe we should’ve ended things a long time ago. The blizzard in Iceland was vicious. However, I had never been more peaceful.

In Berlin, after World War Two, money was short, food was in very short supply and everyone was hungry ... A girl saw a blind man trying to cross the road. Being a kind soul, she helped him, and the two started to talk. He asked her for a favour: could she deliver a letter for him? The address on the envelope was on her way home, so she agreed. Left with the letter, she was about to go when she turned around to see the man hurrying away, suddenly without his dark glasses or his cane. She stopped a policeman and told him what had happened. He read the letter, and immediately called on three colleagues to hurry to the address. There, they found a slaughterhouse full of human flesh for sale.
