I dump my bag on the floor and read through the shelf while pulling books out and mumble as I go. ‘Even a book can be dangerous in the wrong hands.’ ‘Ignite.’ ‘Hell is empty and all the devils are here.’ ‘You’ll make bad choices. Sometimes you’ll choose the best of bad ones.’ ‘Tuesday is Fucked.’ ‘Everything’s a game. And now it’s your turn.’ I have a stack of about 10 books before I abruptly stop. "Next isle." I say and we walk up and down the library isles. I climb and jump to get books off of shelves and Aidan has to catch me a couple of times when I fell.

Leesa sat at the table in the living room, gripped by a feeling she could neither understand nor explain. Her book of magic lay unopened in front of her—for the first time ever, she felt hesitant to lift the cover. She was troubled by a nagging sense that events were combining to drive her toward a dangerous future, and that by opening her book this afternoon she might be taking one more step in that uncertain direction.

When she walked to the sidewall, though, she moved the book on the bookshelf, and soon there was a door that was open, and she was pulling it open.

I just do not know if I am ready yet. “Let me open it for you. I can tell you what is inside. That way you can decide if you want to see it or not” Stefano says. It takes me a moment before curiosity gets the better of me and I agree. Stefano opens the small brown paper package and removes a black leather book. I recognise it immediately. My father practically slept with that book. Stefano holds up the book in the light. It has a lock mechanism with a small keypad that prevents him from opening it.

It brushes the back of my neck and I can feel him right beside me, close enough that his scent wraps around me. My stomach knots. I keep my eyes on the shelves, forcing myself to focus on the rows of titles instead of the way my pulse won’t stop racing. I scan the books until one catches my eye. The title almost makes me laugh, ‘Screwed Up? Here’s Your Reset Button.’ How fitting. I bite the inside of my cheek to keep from snickering and grab the book fast. “I think I see another one,” he utters, his voice dipping a little lower now. “Up top.”

But before I could answer, the clasp on the book shimmered with light—and then unlatched itself. All three of us stared. "Did it just... unlock from your blood?" Andy asked, wide-eyed. "I think so," I breathed. "Creepy," he says. We all stared in silence for a moment, like the book might suddenly start glowing or chanting or floating off into the air. "She’s ready," Zerina whispered. "Now, we find the truth." I opened the book and carried it gently to the couch, holding it like something sacred—probably because it was.

There was a small, hidden slot along the edge of the cover, almost invisible until you knew it was there. She took a deep breath, looked at Kael one more time, and slid the key into place. There was no loud noise, no flash of light. Just a soft, gentle click, and then the whole book seemed to breathe. The leather cover warmed, and when Elara lifted it open, the pages didn’t just show words they began to glow from within, bright but easy to look at, like sunlight through thin paper.

Some were complete. Others were only half written. Many contained only a single page. The mysterious man walked between the shelves, running his fingers lightly across the worn bindings. "Every life..." he said softly, "...begins as an unwritten page." He stopped beside a nearby shelf. From it he removed a thick leather-bound book. Gold letters covered its spine.
