They ate what they had left—a handful of berries that tasted like a promise kept, a strip of salt-fish that tasted like home unlonely, a heel of honeyed bread that tasted better shared than the whole loaf had alone. They drank from the stream. No one toasted. No one needed to.
After, Selene lifted her eyes to the Veil and spoke what had become a refrain between them: “We are three,” she said, “and we remain three.” The boundary’s cool moved over their faces, not possessive. Grateful.
