Chapter 13 — Fuel The voice outside sounded exhausted. Human. And that somehow made it worse. Rain hammered steadily against the motel walkway while silence stretched tightly through the room afterward. Nobody moved. Then the voice came again. “Please. We’re not infected.” Plural. We. Rowan stepped silently away from the window and picked up the splitting maul beside the wall without taking his eyes off the door. Every movement stayed controlled. Evelyn slid slowly off the bed. Her pulse hammered hard enough to hurt now.

Out of curiosity, she opened her eyes and realized her palms were filled with water. “Oh my Goddess!” she exclaimed excitedly, and loud claps erupted from the other students as they celebrated her. “Congratulations,” Professor Steve said with a smile. “It seems you have the gift of water. You’ll learn to control it, shape it, and even use it as a weapon. Now step aside.” Clara, still beaming with excitement, returned to her place in line. The next person stepped forward, and just like Clara, he closed his eyes as Professor Steve began his incantation. But he saw nothing—his vision was blank, and he began to worry.
