Elliot screamed, “Baby, over here.” Pulling my knees to my chest, I screwed my eyes shut, rocking back and forth. Drip. Drip. Drip. “I can’t.....I can’t breathe,” my lungs burned. Each time I tried to inhale, it felt as if my throat had closed in on itself. The tightness in my chest caused an unimaginable discomfort. “Focus on the sound of my voice,” Elliot urged, but he still felt so far away, “I’m right here. In through your nose, out through your mouth.”

There was a rushing noise in my ears, and I felt lightheaded from the lack of oxygen. I felt a hand on my back, and it began to rub over my spine in circles. It was so startling that I had to focus on it, and that helped to drown out the whooshing in my ears just enough for me to hear Axel’s voice. “Breathe with me, Kara, come on,” Axel was saying. “Come on, you can do it. Breathe with me and follow my words. In and out. Okay? Okay, breathe in and hold, one, two, three, four, five, now exhale. Yeah, just like that, you can do it, come on. It’s okay, you’re okay. His breathing from the sofa evens out and goes deep, and I stop noticing it after a while. Then I do notice it. Because it changes. It starts as a shift, a sound, barely anything, the kind a person makes when a dream tips the wrong way. Then his breathing shortens. Then I hear my name clearly, quiet but unmistakable, my name, the way he says it when something's wrong.
