If I do not come up with something he is going to want more answers from somewhere else so I quickly thought of something and answered him. “Yes,” I said giving myself a little more time to say my perfect lie. “What is it then?” He looked so worried and I hate that I was lying to him about this. “Uhm_ She thinks the book has some sort of spiritual meaning to it and because I'm not in the pack yet I couldn't read that far” He rose his eyebrows watching me. I felt so shaken under his intense stare. “That’s a lie, Raina. You had the book with you for a while before” Shit! Why didn't I think of that?

“Hey… about what you saw earlier.” She jumped, clutching the book to her chest. “I—I didn’t see anything. I swear. I won’t tell anyone.” I smiled softly and stepped even closer, backing her gently against the shelves. “Relax. Professor Harlan and I… we have an understanding. But I saw how you looked at us. You didn’t run away because you were scared. You ran because it turned you on, didn’t it?” Her cheeks burned brighter. She shook her head quickly. “No… that’s not… I’m not—”

“Can you not read the title?” I looked at the cover of the book. But I knew that was not the title for I could see the make-shift cover, hiding it. I did that too. “Yes, but I am asking about the real title.” “You have good eyes.” She took off the make shift cover, and now I could read the real name of the book. It was “One Hundred Ways To Kill A Liar.” And I was lying to her. “It is a forbidden book, so don’t tell.” What she said was more of a command or a warning.

The only thing I’ve kept hidden from him—either of him. I pull it out, fingers trembling. Inside: an old burner phone, copies of bank statements, a flash drive… and a gun I’ve never dared to use. I stare at the screen as I type in the number I never thought I’d call again. It rings once. Twice. A voice answers, low and tired. “Celeste?” “I need your help,” I say. “Liam… he’s not who he says he is.” There’s a pause. A breath.

He looked at my father and gave Dave a very hard look, then walked out. “What are you doing here?” “That's not how you speak to your husband, Rhea.” My father's voice was calm. I sat up straighter, ignoring the pain shooting through my ribs. “I don't know what he told you, but it's all lies. Every word…” “I know everything.” He cut me off. “The surrogate. The ex-girlfriend. The donor eggs due to your medical complications. Which part is the lie?” My mouth opened in disbelief. “You…you can't actually think this is okay.”

“Is that a book I can buy online or is it in an app?” He scratched his nose as he said, “it’s in Kindle and A****n next year from what the author has stated, but it’s available to read in the D****e app, I could buy it for you when you d******d it load the app.” He smiled at me again and it felt magical to have him look at me with so much love. “Why did you ask Natasha to lie and to call you? Why did you made this wolf for me? Do you know about the father of my baby?”

“What’s going on? You’ve been in here a while.” “Well, Xavier was just letting me know dinner was wrapping up.” The lie rolled off my tongue before I could think, and I managed a small smile to make it more convincing. “I was also lost in our little discussion that I lost track of time.” Frank looked at me for a moment like he found something blue in what I said and then Xavier, I couldn’t read the plain expression he had, it was the kind of look that made you think he had some suspicious thoughts. My pulse hammered in my ears but I held his gaze, kept my shoulders lose and held on to the smile.
